Zombies Confirmed for 'Call of Duty: Black Ops'

It comes as no surprise that Activision has announced that zombies will be featured in Black Ops, minus certain Nazi attire. After an awesome viral website all but confirmed the popular game mode introduced in World at War,  the gaming community was rippling with excitement. After all, we all love fending off a horde of zombies, no matter what the locale, and Black Ops will certainly offer some unique areas to do it in.

Activision officially made the announcement today, with Treyarch boss Mark Lamia taking the time to say a few words on the feature, presumably before going back to fight off zombies himself:

Zombies have been such a hit with our community that we were committed to bringing brand new zombie experiences to Call of Duty: Black Ops. We’ve taken extra special care to retain the essential ingredients of our Zombie game, and have also crafted a nice surprise for the fans.

Though no in-game videos of the Black Ops version of Zombie Mode have been released yet, we  imagine it much like the original version - defending an area against waves and waves of zombies, repairing blockades, and finding new areas with better weaponry. Speaking of that, one of the most exciting things about zombies coming to Black Ops is that the variety of weapons will add a lot of fun to the game. Though as excited I am about the prospect, I doubt you'll be able to set up a mortar brigade inside some decrepit building.

The mode essentials are the same: Activision has stated that the it will still be centered around the 4-player co-op concept - if you wanted to hold up in a building with 16 other people, you might have to wait until Call of Duty 15 (which, at the rate things are going, will come out in about three years). Of course, you can play with fewer people, or - you brave soul - you can brave the zombies as a lone wolf. If you do, I hope the option to be the bandanna-wearing American soldier is available, because he looks like he was born to do it.

Seriously, look at this guy.

I'm sure nobody is too surprised about Zombies, but we're all pretty stoked to hold up in a building with some friends and enjoy a Zombie Alamo inside our own living rooms. What do you think about Zombie Mode in Black Ops? Are you excited to play it?  What do you think the setting and weaponry will be like? Are zombies suddenly less scary when they're not Nazis? Okay, the answer to that one is yes.

Call of Duty: Black Ops, with zombies in tow, comes to the Xbox 360, PS3, PC, Wii, and DS November 9, 2010.
