In the wake of last week's Zombieland: Double Tap trailer release, GameMill Entertainment and High Voltage Software are releasing a video game called Zombieland: Double Tap - Road Trip to coincide with the movie’s release in October. The game is described as a top-down, twin-stick shooter which ties into the events of both the first movie and its upcoming sequel.

Zombieland: Double Tap - Road Trip will feature local co-op multiplayer for up to 4 players and players will be able to play as one of the original four characters from the Zombieland franchise including Tallahassee, Columbus, Wichita, and Little Rock who are portrayed in the movie by Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin respectively. Other characters from the sequel will also be available in the game as unlockables.

The gameplay is described as an over-the-top and "ridiculously fun" shooter with a variety of different modes. The game will have a story-based campaign, a survival horde mode, and regular daily/weekly challenges for players to compete in. The game’s brief overview also stated that there would be special abilities for all characters and a plethora of deadly weapons to choose from.

The top-down, twin-stick shooter genre is not as populated as some of the other categories out there, and it’s also quite tricky to get it right. Games like Hotline Miami, Geometry Wars, Tachyon Project, and a bunch of others did nail the execution when it comes to fun and exciting twin-stick shooters, but those games didn't really have tie-in movies. It remains to be seen how Zombieland game stays true the genre while remaining faithful to the movie's lore as well as style.

The Zombieland: Double Tap trailer did manage to garner a lot of attention when it landed last week. The trailer also showed off Rosario Dawson, Luke Wilson, and Thomas Middleditch as a bunch of gunslinging survivors. It's very likely that all of these characters or at least a couple of them will make their way into the game as unlockable characters. There is also a high chance that some other characters from the movie might also make an appearance in the game as antagonists, or just helpful NPCs. Only time will reveal if this is going to be another licensed mediocrity by GameMill Entertainment, or if Zombieland: Double Tap - Road Trip is the Zombieland game that every movie fan wanted.

Zombieland: Double Tap - Road Trip launches on October 15 for PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
