The Batman, Warner Bros.'s highly publicized franchise reboot, is becoming less and less of a mystery to audiences as it races to its March release. In a recent interview, Zoe Kravitz has spoken more about her inspirations and approach to her role as Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman.
Throughout and following the 2010s decade, Kravitz has become one of the most recognizable A-list character actresses working today in Hollywood. After appearing in the Showtime series Californication and landing the small but impactful role of Angel in X-Men: First Class, Kravitz went on to appear in various blockbuster films including After Earth, the Divergent series, Mad Max: Fury Road, and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (and its sequel). Interestingly, Kravitz has played Catwoman before in another project, as she voiced the femme fatale in a cameo appearance in The LEGO Batman Movie.
Kravitz spoke to AnOther Magazine about how she was keeping Eartha Kitt's 1960s biracial version of Catwoman in mind while also making the role her own. In other words, her interpretation of Catwoman is as separated as possible from the many previous live-action iterations of Catwoman provided by actresses such as Michelle Pfeiffer and Anne Hathaway. She also stated that she examined the character of Catwoman by asking herself how the role (as written in the script) made her feel as a woman. "How are we approaching this and how are we making sure we’re not fetishizing or creating a stereotype?" she said. "I knew it needed to be a real person."
The Batman is directed by War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves, who has teased a darker version of Batman and his universe than ever before seen in a live-action Batman film. Reeves also serves as the screenwriter alongside Bad Boys for Life scribe Peter Craig. In addition to Robert Pattinson as Batman and Kravitz as Catwoman, the film stars Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Paul Dano as The Riddler, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and an unrecognizable Colin Farrell as The Penguin, among other actors. Lastly, the film boasts cinematography by Greig Fraser and a musical score by Michael Giacchino.
Of course, one of the most exciting features of the film is the fresh takes on classic characters by this new batch of A-list actors, and Pattinson's Batman is the buzziest character depiction in many of the fans' eyes. But the casting choice of Kravitz as Catwoman quietly rivals that title.
Based on her statements about Catwoman to AnOther Magazine, it seems like Kravitz definitely has her head in the game when it comes to bringing Selina Kyle to life. It's safe to say that fans are eagerly awaiting a longer glimpse of her take on the Catwoman character who's been cherished by generations of fans.
The Batman comes to theaters on March 4th, 2022.
