The Wii U was a financial failure for Nintendo, selling a fraction of the consoles as the Wii and having been completely outpaced by the mega popular Nintendo Switch. Since so few people purchased a Wii U, Nintendo has worked to bring the console's games to other platforms. It's to the point where nearly every major Wii U exclusive now has a Nintendo Switch version readily available, and it seems that will soon include more Legend of Zelda games.
Speaking on his podcast, industry insider Jeff Grubb believes that Nintendo will finally release the long-rumored Nintendo Switch versions of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD at some point this October. Grubb pointed out that Nintendo has released a Zelda game for the Switch every year since the console's inception as further evidence that the ports are on the way.
It's true that Nintendo has released a Zelda game for Switch every year since the console launched. The Switch launched with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in 2017, while spin-off Hyrule Warriors: Definitive Edition released in 2018. The Link's Awakening remake dropped in 2019, while Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity released in 2020 and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD launched in 2021.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 release date is not until Spring 2023, so it would make sense for Nintendo to release Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD to keep fans engaged in the meantime. It's possible Nintendo will release the games in a dual pack, but it could release them separately instead. If Nintendo decided to go that route, it would be interesting to see if it just releases one of the games for now and saves the other for 2024 or something.
The Legend of Zelda fans will likely appreciate the chance to play Switch versions of Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD, especially if they never owned a Wii U. These versions of the game provide upgraded graphics and gameplay enhancements, with the improvements to Wind Waker especially noticeable. However, others may be more interested in the long-awaited Breath of the Wild sequel.
Luckily, there's a chance Nintendo could be sharing more information on all these projects sooner rather than later. While there have been some exceptions, Nintendo usually hosts a big Nintendo Direct event in the summer where it unveils its upcoming slate of games. This event is usually tied to E3, but even though E3 2022 is canceled, Nintendo fans should still be able to look forward to a Direct presentation taking place sooner rather than later.
