Throughout the five years since the Nintendo Switch first arrived on the scene, Nintendo's newest home console has followed many of the company's past iterations in bringing a plethora of classic Nintendo games to the platform. Between the Nintendo Switch Online inclusion of NES, SNES, Sega Genesis, and Nintendo 64 games and the multitude of ports like New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, the console has frequently honored the developer's storied history. Now, however, a recent reports show that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess fans may be waiting a while longer.
Since its initial release for the GameCube and Wii, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess has been a mainstay of Nintendo's library on its consoles. Serving as a launch title for the Wii, the grimdark adventure following Link and the mysterious Twilight Realm released just a few weeks later for GameCube and has since been remastered on the Wii U as Twilight Princess HD in 2016. Now, with rumors swirling about the popular Zelda game coming to the Switch this year, Tantalus, the studio behind Skyward Sword HD, has revealed it has yet to be contacted about Twilight Princess.
On a recent episode of the "Fragments of Silicon" podcast, Tantalus CEO Tom Crago spoke with host Adam Dayton about the potential port of the iconic Zelda game, confirming that Nintendo has yet to reach out to Tantalus about bringing Twilight Princess to Switch. While Crago expressed Tantalus's enthusiasm behind a potential Twilight Princess port, he was quick to point out that bringing the game to Switch was "not a priority for Nintendo" in conversations between the two developers.
While a Twilight Princess HD port to the Switch may not be in the works, Tantalus would likely be one of the first studios in contact with Nintendo about the project both due to its own history with Nintendo and its legacy of remasters. Tantalus previously worked on Twilight Princess HD's original release as well as working with Forgotten Empires and Xbox Game Studios on recent definitive edition releases of Age of Empires 2 and 3. The studio even created Switch versions of recent games like Cities: Skylines and Sonic Mania.
The release of a new version of Twilight Princess would join a large list of past Zelda games made available through the Nintendo Switch. Alongside the HD version of Skyward Sword, Nintendo Switch Online's retro offerings have brought the original Legend of Zelda, Zelda 2, A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, and most recently Majora's Mask to the Switch, with rumors of a future Game Boy Advance roster potentially adding portable Zelda games like The Minish Cap. While fans may still be waiting some time for Twilight Princess, the Switch's library holds plenty of games for the Zelda-faithful.
