Breath of the Wild's stamina bar returns in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom alongside almost every action that the resource was used for. Though there are plenty of new navigation abilities in Tears of the Kingdom, there's nothing quite like slowly watching the stamina meter deplete while carefully climbing up the side of a mountain.

Another use of the stamina bar is Link's ability to sprint for short distances. Though it rapidly depletes stamina, knowing how to run in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom can mean all the difference between making a getaway by the skin of Link's teeth or getting killed by something avoidable. The sprint controls in Tears of the Kingdom are the same as in Breath of the Wild, except for players who have customized their control layout or swapped one in-game option.

How To Sprint in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

To run in Tears of the Kingdom, the default input is the bottom face button, B. Hold the B button down while moving in a direction, and Link will sheathe his weapon and break into a speedy dash. Link moves noticeably faster on flat ground when sprinting but not so much faster on inclined surfaces and stairs.

This input may be different for some players, though, because the Switch Pro Controller and Joy-Con can now be customized and because Tears of the Kingdom actually lets players swap the Jump button for the Sprint button. If players have this option enabled, then to make Link run, hold down the X button instead. Players who have customized their Joy-Con or Pro Controller with a new layout should refer to their input settings and see which button B is mapped to, as that will serve as their sprint button in Tears of the Kingdom.

Running in Tears of the Kingdom gets rid of a ton of stamina very quickly – at the start of the game, Link can barely make it more than a few seconds in a full sprint before the meter runs out. To upgrade the amount of stamina available, players can complete Shrines to restore Link's power.

Just like in Breath of the Wild, the stamina meter will eventually max out, but Link will be able to run for much longer – and do much more in general.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
