The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom reviews are in, and it is now one of the highest-rated video games ever made. The Zelda franchise has dominated the list of highest-rated video games for decades, with The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time still listed as the highest-rated video game according to review aggregate site Metacritic.
Considering the incredible consistency The Legend of Zelda franchise has enjoyed, many expected Tears of the Kingdom to continue that tradition. After all, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild, itself the 14th highest-rated game on Metacritic. It remains to be seen exactly where The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will land on that list, but it should be within the top 25 highest-rated games based on its early review scores.
Metacritic has yet to post its aggregate score for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but fellow review aggregate site OpenCritic currently has the game listed at a 97 overall rating withy 100% of critics recommending it. This would make The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom tied for highest-rated game in OpenCritic history (sharing that spot with Super Mario Odyssey), as well the highest-rated new video game release of 2023 by far. Now, there is still time for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom's overall review score to fluctuate in one direction or another, but it's unlikely to veer too far from its 97 overall rating.
Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Review Scores
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is enjoying universal acclaim, with glowing praise for basically everything the game has to offer. Critics are loving Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom's massive open world, Link's impressive new abilities, and the improvements from Breath of the Wild. This includes less of a focus on weapon durability as well as the return of classic-style Legend of Zelda dungeons.
Nintendo has clearly hit it out of the park with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and it will be interesting to see if these extremely high review scores translate to record-breaking sales for the franchise. The Nintendo Switch is one of the best-selling video game consoles of all time and that combined with Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom being one of the highest-rated games of all time means chances are good the game is going to be an absolutely massive hit.
