There are a few new systems in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, even when not taking Link's new abilities into consideration. One returning system is the ability to tame and ride horses and keep them registered at Stables found throughout Hyrule. But even this mainstay of Breath of the Wild isn't quite the same as it was, thanks to a new system – Pony Points.

It's a brand-new feature in Tears of the Kingdom that players who love to customize their horses ought to take full advantage of. There's a huge roster of rewards available in the Pony Points system, and thankfully it's effortless to farm them en masse. But to farm Pony Points and get all rewards, players must have a heavy wallet and be willing to navigate the same tedious menu repeatedly.

What Are Pony Points?

Pony Points are a new currency Link can build up in several ways, all involving the Stables he can find throughout Hyrule in some way. By registering a horse or buying a bed for the night – without using a Sleepover Ticket – Link earns one Pony Point. They can also be earned from a handful of side quests, which are also conveniently given near Stables most of the time, too.

When Link gets a Pony Point, a little text box will appear in the top right corner of the screen that shows how many more Pony Points he has to earn a reward. They pop up in the same place players see Lights of Blessing and other unique collectibles. Once Link has enough, he can approach the stable desk from the side to find a third counter, one meant for collecting Pony Point rewards.

There are a ton of horse-related rewards for progressing Link's Pony Points counter, including the ability to register more than six horses (up to 10), acquire new saddles and bridles, and even gain the ability to use special beds and customize horses' manes. Though Link can typically only earn one at a time, farming Pony Points is easy as long as Link has a big wallet and a lot of time.

Link will earn one Pony Point whenever he rents a bed for the night at a Stable, but players must make sure to pay for the bed and not use a Sleepover Ticket. Once the 20 Rupees are handed over, and Link wakes up, it is automatically added to Link's stash. This isn't a one-time-per-stable type of thing, though. In fact, as long as players have the Rupees for it, Pony Points can be earned back to back by simply getting a Standard Bed for the night over and over again.

It's a tedious process, but it's much faster than finding new horses to register or tracking down every Pony Point-related quest. To unlock the final reward, Link has to get 60 total Pony Points. Multiply that by 20 Rupees for each point, and players can expect to pay 1,200 Rupees to max out their Pony Points.

It takes roughly 30 seconds to go through all the dialogue and sleeping cutscene each time, so players can expect to sit down for about half an hour to get all Pony Point rewards.

There are 16 different rewards Link can earn by collecting Pony Points, each of which is unlocked at different point thresholds. The number of Pony Points Link needs to unlock the next reward is shown each time he earns one. Rewards range from ingredients to cosmetics and other gameplay benefits, like access to cheaper beds and stable services across Hyrule.

Though the total number required for each reward increases with each tier, there are never more than five points between rewards. As such, players can expect to do a lot of running between counters if they farm Pony Points rather than earn them naturally.

It is worth noting that the last major gameplay bonus that can be earned from Pony Points, the reduction in cost for beds and registering horses, is a reward at 40 Pony Points. Players who don't care about Sleepover Tickets or Endura Carrots don't need to farm beyond that mark.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available exclusively on the Nintendo Switch.
