A creative fan of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker has recreated the game's opening area using the expansive Far Cry Arcade level editor included in Far Cry 5. Although not as highly celebrated on launch as other titles in its series, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker carries a strong legacy and is one of the GameCube's trademark titles.

The Legend of Zelda is one of the few game series to have many of its entries be celebrated as some of the greatest games of all time with nearly every game in the series being a critical and commercial success. The Wind Waker, released in 2003, is a partial outlier to this due to its divisive art style and character design that stands out against previous games and got some initial backlash from critics and fans alike. History has been kinder to The Wind Waker, and its art style has reappeared in numerous entries since. The game itself is now widely regarded as a high point for the series and is still represented in The Legend of Zelda fan art to this day.

The generally non-continuous nature of The Legend of Zelda games has led to certain locations in Hyrule taking on different forms. Areas like Hyrule Castle and the Temple of Time have seen numerous designs but remain memorable locations in the minds of Zelda fans. Some areas have yet to make direct reappearances in other games, such as Outset Island from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. This island was faithfully recreated by a fan in Far Cry 5's level editor, Far Cry Arcade, complete with the island's signature palm trees, wooden architecture, and tropical environment.

The user, who goes by Mojo Swoptops on YouTube, uploaded a walkthrough of the island on their channel, stating in the description that it took them three hours to build. This is not their first time recreating a fictional place in Far Cry Arcade, having previously done recreations of Skyrim's Riverwood and Helm's Deep from The Lord of the Rings. The video walkthrough of Outset Island ends with the player character kicking a chicken, a callback to their previous walkthrough of the Riverwood recreation.

Games in The Legend of Zelda series often act as system sellers for Nintendo consoles. The next game in the series, Tears of the Kingdom, is one of the most anticipated games of 2023. As the series gets more entries, older games in the franchise will experience renewed interest from newer fans. As The Wind Waker approaches its 20-year anniversary, now would be a better time than ever for Nintendo to bring the game to the Switch.

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was released on the Nintendo GameCube in 2003 and was remastered for the Wii U in 2013.
