YouTuber and streamer Torje has officially set a new speedrun world record for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Nintendo 64. The new record of 17:09 is four seconds faster than Torje’s previous Ocarina of Time record of 17:13.

Torje was livetreaming at the time he set the new record, so his gameplay, reaction, and excitement is available for gamers to rewatch. The speedrun video, which can be seen below, shows Torje casually moving through the first half of the game before gaining momentum at the end and setting the new record.

Interestingly, Torje was a second or so behind the previous speedrun record during most of his attempt. In fact, he states later on in the stream that he made a few silly mistakes early on. This is likely the reason he was fairly relaxed during the first half of the speedrun, talking casually with the stream chat about his hometown and the game.

That changed during the Collapse section of the game, where Torje was able to make up nearly 4 seconds on his run, which ultimately led to the new record. On the stream, the timer shows 17:10.06, but a re-time from Torje and an inspection of the frames proves the time was actually 17:09.83.

It’s very impressive for a speedrunner to beat a time by multiple seconds. When so much of a speedrun hinges on milliseconds, the fact that Torje beat his previous record by such a large margin is quite impressive. And Torje isn’t done yet. During the stream, the speedrunner mentions how he should be able to shave an additional one to two seconds off his latest time with a smoother run at the beginning of the iconic Legend of Zelda title and strong RNG at the end.

Like many speedrun games, Ocarina of Time on Nintendo 64 has a few exploitable bugs that Torje and other speedrunners can use to skip entire sections of the game. Rules for speedrunning state that gamers can use in-game bugs and exploits as much as they want, but cannot use any outside cheats or exploits that they insert themselves. These rules allow gamers to make the most of the game as it was at launch, and since it’s a Nintendo 64 title, there are no bug fixes coming to the game.

With that in mind, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Torje set a new record of 17:08 or even 17:07 if everything works out in his favor. At this point, that might be the fastest possible time for an Ocarina of Time speedrun unless gamers are able to find any more exploits in the title that help them carve off a few more seconds. Maybe Torje’s next big challenge will be to speedrun The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time while blindfolded.
