During this past week's Nintendo Direct, the company capped off its video showcase by revealing that a remade version of 1993's The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening would be coming to the Nintendo Switch later this year. While being built from the ground up and revealing a brand opening anime-style cinematic caught the attention of many, the potential for a new online mode may come as a surprise.

When looking at Nintendo's product listing for The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Remake for the Nintendo Switch, many have noticed the section of the listing which signifies the number of players has been labeled "To Be Determined," leaving speculation as to whether or not the final version of the game will incorporate some type of multiplayer. Given the original game was an exclusively single-player experience, this has left many wondering how Nintendo could approach the idea of adding online features to the remake of Link's Awakening.

It's not as if The Legend of Zelda franchise has never taken to the idea of multiplayer features within the Legend of Zelda universe. While earlier games such as the Four Swords titles and The Wind Waker offered smaller companion options that allowed friends to play together, The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes is probably the most multiplayer focused Zelda game. Seeing as how both Tri-Force Heroes and Link's Awakening are played from a top-down camera perspective, this would appear to the be likely approach to online play for the latter, should Nintendo choose to do so.

Seeing as how the Nintendo Switch launched with a brand new Zelda game with The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Nintendo's decision to not only remake one of the franchise's most popular titles, but also to possibly add extra incentive to keep players invested in playing it after they complete the story could be seen as a means to hold fans over while the next game in the series is being developed. There had been speculation for some time of a Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening Remake in the works, however those rumors had assumed the game would be coming to the 3DS, and not the Nintendo Switch.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening will launch in 2019 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
