The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is full of endless hours of gameplay to keep players entertained well after the credits roll. One of the most exciting items that came to Breath of the Wild as part of the DLC is Majora's Mask. When wearing the item, Link is able to trick weaker monsters into thinking he is part of their clan, and the enemies will circle around him and welcome him into their pack. Here is how players can obtain the one-of-a-kind item.

Updated on March 7, 2023, by Renri Seong: With Tears of the Kingdom set to release in 2023, some fans may be revisiting Breath of the Wild. In June 2017, BotW released its first wave of DLC. This included the Trial of the Sword as well as several pieces of armor stored in EX Treasure Chests. One of these treasures happens to be Majora's Mask, which familiar fans will recognize as the primary antagonist in the Majora's Mask video game, a sequel to Ocarina of Time. Those with Breath of the Wild's Expansion Pass can obtain the mask as soon as they step outside the Great Plateau, so here's everything there is to know about getting it.

Get the Paraglider

If this is a new file on BotW, Link will awaken in the Shrine of Resurrection. This starts a "tutorial"-esque mode in which he needs to activate the Great Plateau Tower. Then, he'll be approached by the old man who's willing to offer the paraglider in exchange for the surrounding Shrine Treasure (i.e., Spirit Orbs). Going inside the Shrines will also unlock the four main runes of the Sheikah Slate.

Once this is all done, the old man, revealed to be the spirit of King Rhoam, will finally give Link the Paraglider. From here on out, Link can leave the Great Plateau. If players have the Expansion Pass, the DLC-exclusive quests will "unlock." The quest for Majora's Mask is titled EX: Ancient Mask, so as long as this shows up on-screen after gliding down from the Plateau, the mask can be found.

Where is Majora's Mask?

Majora's Mask is in the Kolomo Garrison Ruins at the edge of Lake Komolo. It's buried in some rubble facing away from the water. Use the Magnesis Rune to see exactly where it is. Metal items will be highlighted in pink/red, indicating they can be moved with Magnesis. If players are still having trouble, refer to the green marker in the above image.

Lake Komolo and the Komolo Garrison Ruins should be free of monsters - especially during the day. So, feel free to walk right in and dig up the chest with Magnesis.

If players have started the Locked Mementos main quest, then they should look to the left of Lake Kolomo (on the map). There'll be an outcrop of land, and next to that is a golden ring. Stand in the middle of this ring and press A to "unlock" one of Link's Memories (Memory 2). If players haven't started this main quest, then make a note of where it is to return to at a later time.

Can You Upgrade Majora's Mask?

Majora's Mask cannot be upgraded by a Great Fairy. Since it isn't part of an Armor Set, Majora's Mask offers no Set Bonus either. Players may be wondering if it's even worth getting. While Majora's Mask won't give BotW Link the power to drop the moon, wearing it will make weak monsters (Bokoblins, Moblins, and Lizalfos) friendly. It essentially has the same effect as Kilton's Bokoblin/Moblin/Lizalfos Mask. However, unlike those masks, Majora's Mask will affect all three enemies, meaning Link won't have to keep shuffling from mask to mask.

Majora's Mask does not work on Lynels, Guardians, or Octoroks. Weaker enemies like the Chuchus and Keese won't fall for the ruse, either.

The base defense of Majora's Mask is a measly 1 Defense, making it absolutely poor in combat. In fact, it's a point weaker than the Tingle Hat, another DLC-exclusive item.

This mask is best used when players want to walk in the middle of enemy camps to loot weapons or open treasure chests. Since its resting place at Komolo Garrison Ruins is literally right outside the Plateau, Majora's Mask can be useful for those just starting BotW.

Breath of the Wild and its DLC is available for Nintendo Switch.
