In case anyone somehow missed it, Nintendo dropped another surprise bombshell today with a reveal trailer for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, a follow-up to spin-off title Hyrule Warriors and a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

With still no sign of the Breath of the Wild sequel, which was announced at last year's E3 and is so far only known as Breath of the Wild 2 (which will most likely change down the line), fans, though excited for this new title, are understandably curious about what is happening with the sequel.

Since that initial trailer, Nintendo has been completely quiet about it and no official details have been revealed. There have been rumors and supposed leaks, such as a collector's edition that was spotted on a French retailer's website, but none of it has been concrete.

Series producer Eiji Aonuma is likely aware of fans' desire for more information, so he chose to address it during the announcement video for Age of Calamity. Unfortunately, all he could really say was that the game is still in development and fans are going to have to remain patient for any updates.

"Regarding the sequel, in order to make the vast world you enjoyed exploring in the original game even more impressive, the team is working hard on its development, so you'll have to wait a bit longer before we can provide more updates."

Considering how massive the first Breath of the Wild was and how much freedom it offered players from the get-go, it's not all that surprising to know that the sequel's taking a long time to make, especially if the developers are aiming to improve on that gargantuan world.

Let's not forget that the initial announcement trailer only featured short snippets of cutscenes and no gameplay, so development was probably still in the very early stages at the time and that was only a year ago.

Still, that short trailer was enough for fans to come up with wild and elaborate theories for what the sequel will offer in terms of gameplay and story. Plenty are theorizing/hoping that Zelda herself will be playable and that the plot will involve time travel of some kind.

Those eager for a playable Zelda, however, will be thrilled to know that she will be playable in Age of Calamity, where she appears to use the Sheikah Slate to freeze enemies in place.

With it being the series' 35th anniversary next year, maybe we'll some sort of Breath of the Wild 2 announcement to tie in with that. At the very least, fans are hopeful for some sort of anniversary collection of games, similar to the 3D All-Stars compilation Nintendo has made for Mario's anniversary, which combines Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy into one package.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is in development for Nintendo Switch.
