Part of the reason Zelda fans want to know more about The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is there's a lot of unanswered questions about the game. For one thing, it's not entirely clear what the game's plot is. Trailers for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 provide only a glimpse at a dark and mysterious threat lurking beneath the surface in Hyrule. Everything from Zelda's fate to Link's identity is up for debate in a time when Nintendo doesn't even want to reveal the Breath of the Wild sequel's title for fear of spoiling details.
That leaves fans to speculate. The Zelda community wants to know where the Breath of the Wild subseries is going, and how central Zelda lore ties into it. For instance, many fans want to know if the Master Sword plays a significant role in the game. Because of Breath of the Wild's weapon system, which diverges drastically from series tradition, the fate of Link's signature weapon is unclear - but it might play another part. Many fans think Breath of the Wild 2 has something to do with Skyward Sword, which could mean Fi will reemerge from the Master Sword to guide Link. If rumors about Demise's return are true, then Fi's return would be a blessing.
Fi Could Reemerge from the Master Sword
In most Zelda games that involve the Master Sword, there's a major plot point in which Link learns about the sword and has to retrieve it to advance. From that point on, it almost never leaves his side. Breath of the Wild couldn't have treated the Master Sword differently. In contrast to the usual role of the sword, Breath of the Wild's Link finds the sword in the forest, then learns obtaining the sword is a matter of grabbing it once he has enough Hearts. It's a far less ceremonious role for the Master Sword than usual. The Breath of the Wild DLC focused on tempering the Master Sword, which helped make it significant, but it's still a trivial part of the game on the whole.
Breath of the Wild 2 has the opportunity to change that, and odds are good that it will - especially if BOTW 2 has something to do with Skyward Sword. Skyward Sword is all about the creation of the Master Sword and the beginning of Link and Zelda's eternal struggle against evil. Nintendo even went as far as to give the Master Sword a personality in the form of Fi to emphasize the sword's importance. Fi disappears into the Master Sword at the end of Skyward Sword, but there's nothing stopping Nintendo from reviving Fi so she can change the course of Breath of the Wild 2, especially if Demise has something to do with BOTW 2's events.
Many fans believe that the demon king Demise, Skyward Sword's ultimate antagonist and the demonic ancestor of Ganon, will return in his true form in Breath of the Wild 2. If that's the case, Link and Zelda will need to know how he was defeated last time. Fi was there for the entire battle against Demise, so it'd make perfect sense if she reemerged to help Link and Zelda. Breath of the Wild even reinstates the goddess Hylia as an important divine figure. As her creator, Hylia could revive Fi to tap into her knowledge for the new war against Demise.
Fi Could Truly Embody the Master Sword
Breath of the Wild 2 is almost certainly still going to make use of Breath of the Wild's weapon inventory, giving Link a broad range of weapons to use. That would mean he probably won't carry the Master Sword all the time, but there's still ways to make the sword and Fi important. For example, maybe the Master Sword's power gets dampened by the power of Demise. It might not be of any use to Link, but Fi might still emerge and protect it until Link can rid it of Demise's influence, eventually wielding the Master Sword in Breath of the Wild 2's finale.
The demon lord Ghirahim presents another interesting possibility for the Master Sword. At the end of Skyward Sword, Ghirahim reveals he's a Sword Spirit just like Fi, transforming into Demise's sword. Maybe the Master Sword will transform into Fi in the same way, keeping the Master Sword safe by containing all of its power inside one person. If that happens, then Fi can travel with Link and perhaps even fight alongside him while keeping the Master Sword safe until the moment it's needed.
Breath of the Wild Foretells Fi's Return
Perhaps the most important piece of evidence that Fi may return in Breath of the Wild 2 is she seems to make minor appearances in the first game. In certain scenes, Zelda mentions that the Master Sword once had a voice, and then later she claims to hear the Master Sword speaking to her when Link is in peril. Additionally, when Link perfects the Master Sword through the Trial of the Sword, players hear one of Fi's sound effects emerge from the blade. All of these references to Fi suggest Nintendo wants to use her again, and probably sooner rather than later. All of these hints at Fi's reawakening suggests she may make a true reappearance in Breath of the Wild 2.
Even for a franchise with a sprawling timeline, a crossover between Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild 2 would a twist on the course of The Legend of Zelda. There's been plenty of sequels or tangentially connected games over the years, but Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild exist at the opposite ends of the Zelda timeline. Connecting the two games would mean there's probably some cataclysmic event on the horizon, potentially redefining The Legend of Zelda forever. Nothing is certain, but if any fan theories are correct, Breath of the Wild 2 will be worth the wait. The return of Fi and other Skyward Sword characters would herald a major climax for The Legend of Zelda.
