The Legend of Zelda franchise has housed some of the most most popular games in Nintendo's catalog. The original game had an unrivaled sense of adventure and exploration, and later games would continue to build upon these elements while subtly injecting their own ideas into the mix. The latest mainline iteration, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is no exception with great critical and commercial reception.

While players are still discovering secrets and new techniques within the game, many fans are clamoring for more information on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. Nintendo might have confirmed that more information might be coming the way of players by the end of this year, but fans shouldn't get all too excited at the possibility of a 2021 release.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 may have been shown off during E3 2019, but there's a great possibility that the game might be quite some ways off. With no information on the game's narrative, the world, and associated elements, it's impossible to estimate at exactly what point the game is in its development. From the looks of it, it seems that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is being actively worked upon, especially with the recent announcement regarding the game during Nintendo Direct. News is coming later this year, but if it's in active development vs. a polishing stage, that means several months, if not years, of work to go.

However, many fans have started speculating other theories about its release, with the heavily rumored Nintendo Switch Pro/Super Switch being a recurring theme. According to many fans and industry insiders alike, there's a great possibility that Nintendo might be intentionally keeping Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 for a Super Switch launch title. There's a multitude of reasons as to why this seems like a plausible case, but the global hardware shortages do diminish the possibility of a Nintendo Switch Pro releasing this year.

It's Not All Bad News

While the distant release of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 may be disappointing to some fans, there is already a lot of content coming to fans. In the meantime,  The Breath of the Wild modding community has been working towards creating a huge mod, or rather expansion in the form of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Second Wind. The mod may only work on the emulated Wii U version of the game, but there's a lot to look forward to.

The mod aims to add entirely new areas, side quests, armor pieces, weapons, and entirely new things such as unbreakable weapons/shields along with a brand new hand-to-hand martial arts combat system. The first part of the expansion, Labors of the Hero is already in beta testing, and the distant release of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is sure to give the mod a great time to shine. In addition to this, there are a plethora of Zelda games that fans may want to invest in, including the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is currently in development.
