The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been one of the Nintendo Switch’s most popular titles. While Breath of the Wild 2 is not coming until 2022, it’s expected to pick up where the last game left off and is one of the most anticipated games of next year. However, Breath of the Wild 2 should evolve on the work done in the original Breath of the Wild by adding a much-requested feature.

Breath of the Wild is widely considered to be a modern classic and a great evolution of The Legend of Zelda series. But many fans were left hoping for more, in the form of a first-person perspective. Some even turned to glitches in order to experience Breath of the Wild in first-person, but this isn’t a long-term solution. Instead, many fans would prefer if Breath of the Wild 2 is released next year with a built-in first-person option for those who prefer a slightly different experience.

How to Play Breath of the Wild in First-Person

Breath of the Wild players discovered in early 2021 that they were able to play Breath of the Wild in first-person mode with the use of an item from The Champion’s Ballad. The second DLC pack from Breath of the Wild introduced the Master Cycle Zero, a motorbike that allows players to travel throughout Hyrule in a way they never have before. The Master Cycle Zero bike also allowed players to experience Breath of the Wild from an all-new perspective, which was exciting news for Breath of the Wild players at the time. However, players without The Champion’s Ballad DLC pack were disappointed that they were exempt from making use of it. That is until very recently, as Breath of the Wild fans have discovered an even better way to enter first person.

Redditor Diamond-Herobrine shared the news of a new glitch, initially posted on Twitter via the @SNSKTues Twitter account. The new Breath of the Wild first-person glitch allows all players to experience the game from a first-person perspective, with or without The Champion’s Ballad DLC pack. A short video showing the glitch being triggered outlines the process, which according to the poster is “Weapon smuggle, re-equip shield, switch rune to the camera, hold an item, press zl, switch weapons and then press L and + together”. While in the video the process looks to be fairly complex, other Redditors have chimed in with their success stories using this method. It may be a tricky method to get a hang of, but for Breath of the Wild fans who prefer a first-person perspective, this is the cheapest way to achieve it.

Why Breath of the Wild 2 Should Come With First-Person

If these first-person glitches have exposed anything, it is the gamer’s desire for a first-person option in Breath of the Wild. Fans are going to quite extreme lengths in order to find workarounds to Breath of the Wild’s third-person default, so it seems clear that an option in Breath of the Wild 2 to switch to a first-person perspective without going through an elaborate exploit would go over well with fans. It would certainly save first-person gaming enthusiasts a fair amount of time upon startup if they were able to simply press a button or default to their preferred perspective. Not only would this add convenience to the title for fans of first-person action games, but it would provide a good amount of variety to gamers who may be sat on the fence.

But aside from the obvious demand for a first-person perspective in Breath of the Wild 2, it doesn’t seem as though there’s any real reason not to add more choices to the game. Another open-world action-adventure series in The Elder Scrolls allows players to choose between their preferred perspectives, which just gives players more options. In The Elder Scrolls, switching between perspectives is made easy, so much so that players may choose to play the entire game in one perspective, or alternate depending on situations they’re faced with.

Some players may prefer to explore in third-person, but engage in combat in first-person, and they’d find doing so fairly straightforward. The exploration and combat loop in Breath of the Wild isn’t all too different to that of games in The Elder Scrolls series, so this balance could work in quite a similar way in Breath of the Wild 2.

The Perks of a First-Person Perspective in Breath of the Wild 2

While there are voiced characters in The Legend of Zelda series, Link is an example of a silent protagonist. These are fairly common in action RPGs, with examples including The Elder Scrolls and the Fallout series (excluding Fallout 4). One big reason for a silent protagonist is that the player is able to project their own identity onto the character they’re controlling. In the case of Link, he has become a major icon in the gaming world, and as such, some may still prefer to see Link and roleplay as the Champion of Hyrule. But for those that want a truly immersive experience, a first-person perspective may aid in cutting the distance between the player and the character. This would open up Breath of the Wild 2 to a wider audience, including fans of open-world RPG games.

Fans also differ on their preference when it comes to first-person vs third-person because each perspective offers up unique gameplay differences. Of course, seeing as third-person view places the camera above the character’s head, the player is offered a broader view of their surroundings, and as such, it is a perspective often preferred for stealth sections. But some gamers prefer the feeling that they don’t know what’s waiting around the corner. For example, if a character like Link was not able to see over a wall or around a corner, some would prefer if they also couldn’t.

Once again, a choice of perspective largely comes down to preference, so the ideal scenario would be that Breath of the Wild 2 would be similar to The Elder Scrolls in that the player is able to switch perspectives. While it may be unlikely that Breath of the Wild 2 will come with a first-person perspective, it could be a great feature that helps shape the series' future.
