If you ever craved a film combing the Star Wars-like battles in a galaxy far far away with the epic samurai dramas of Akira Kurosawa, this newly announced film might be for you. Man of Steel and Justice League director Zack Snyder has announced an exciting new sci-fi film, a little off-kilter from his normal DC routine. The upcoming film titled Rebel Moon was just announced, after numerous pitches and studio denials, as a Netflix exclusive film.
News of Rebel Moon arrives nearly two months after Snyder's Army of the Dead debuted on Netflix. The streamer's partnership with Zack and Deborah Snyder resulted in the zombie heist film becoming one of Netflix's top ten most-watched films, with prequel films and anime series coming in the future.
Rebel Moon was originally meant to be a Star Wars spin-off film nearly a decade ago but never came to fruition after Disney bought out the franchise in 2012. Zack Snyder claims the film will still be inspired by the Star Wars universe, but it will also draw from the classic Japanese filmmaker Kurosawa. Netflix took over the project and officially announced the film on July 6th along with the premise for the film. "When a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical Regent Balisarius, they dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighboring planets to help them take a stand," reads the official logline.
The synopsis for Rebel Moon reads like a Kurosawa plot with a science fiction setting. In many ways, the plot also seems similar to a number of science fiction films but also brings to mind the story of Princess Leia and her situation with her home planet Alderaan. With a name like Rebel Moon, undoubtedly the compromising situations of planets like Alderaan, Tatooine, and the moon Endor come to mind. Zack Snyder also claims that he aims to start a franchise that will have its own universe, similar to the Star Wars saga.
Production on the film should begin shortly into next year. With Zack Snyder's track history in directing numerous DC action films and spin-offs, Rebel Moon is sure to include the same intense plotlines, characters, and action-packed battle. With so little information about the film available right now, when a cast is released and first trailers begin coming out, more will be able to be said about what to expect from this film.
With a purely science-fiction synopsis and an incredible superhero director, Rebel Moon could be the next big upcoming franchise. Even Zack Snyder's critics probably can't deny that it will deliver on the spectacle audiences have to come to expect from sci-fi epics.
