Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman and Justice League featured multiple characters from DC lore, but it appears there were several more who were considered for the DC Extended Universe that didn't make the cut. Now, Snyder has opened up about some of the Batman villains he would've brought to the live-action film series.

After launching the DC Extended Universe with Man of Steel, Snyder expanded the franchise with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. While these projects were intended to be part of an overarching storyline, the mixed reception towards the theatrical release of Justice League prompted Warner Bros. to jettison Snyder's original vision for the DCEU and move forward in a different direction.

During an interview with BroBible, Snyder was asked what villains he would have introduced in the DCEU had he been left in charge of the franchise. Noting that the Penguin was a Batman villain he "very much" considered using, Snyder stated that he also talked about using Catwoman and the Riddler. In fact, as Snyder reminded fans, Riddler was going to be used to solve the Anti-Life equation, a formula that allows those who know it to dominate all forms of life. After expressing his excitement over seeing Colin Farrell's take on the Penguin in Matt Reeves' The Batman, Snyder discussed what he would like to see from the villain. "Frankly, I’d love to see Penguin — I think will be cool. I think that’s a great character and I’d love to see a version of Penguin that has an inherent camp to it. It’d be awesome to see how you could deconstruct it and make him into something crazy," he said.

While Snyder won't be able to bring Catwoman and the Riddler to the silver screen himself, both characters will play a pivotal role in Reeves' The Batman. Zoe Kravitz will portray Selina Kyle/Catwoman, while Paul Dano takes on the role of a more sinister Riddler. As mentioned, Farrell takes on the role of the Penguin, a.k.a. Oswald Cobblepot, though the actor himself has indicated that the character has a relatively small role in the film.

Still, calls for Warner Bros. to restore the Snyderverse continue to come from a vocal and passionate segment of fans. While it seems unlikely that the studio will acquiesce to their wishes, unlike what happened with the Snyder Cut of Justice League, it appears even the positive reception towards the first trailer for The Batman was not enough to stop some fans from wondering what might have been.

After all, few would doubt that Snyder approached the DC Extended Universe with a great deal of passion. Regardless of whether or not fans enjoyed his interpretations of classic DC characters or think he even understood them, even most of Snyder's harshest critics concede that his DCEU films were ambitious if nothing else.

The Batman is scheduled to be released in theaters on March 4, 2022.
