With Kirby’s Epic Yarn, Nintendo discovered that Nintendo character + fabric= adorable. The Wii game tasked players with taking the little pink puffball through a world composed of yarn, allowing Kirby to unravel his surroundings to suit his needs. Now, Nintendo is bringing one its most iconic characters back into the starring role in a game that cranks the cuteness up to 11.
Yoshi’s Wooly World puts players in the shoes of Mario’s cuddly dinosaur pal as he embarks on an adventure in a world of yarn. After the evil wizard Kamek turns all of Yoshi’s friends into yarn balls, it’s up to the little green guy to save them.
While Yoshi’s Wooly World was announced all the way back in 2013, this new trailer gives us the best look at the title yet. Looking like a mash-up of Yoshi’s Island and Kirby’s Epic Yarn, the cuteness practically explodes off the screen. Instead of eating enemies, Yoshi unravels them and turns them into yarn balls. Yoshi can also snack on his surroundings, pulling on the threads of his environment to reveal hidden areas. Players can also recruit a friend to tackle the entire game in co-op mode.
With it’s cute presentation and adorable characters, Nintendo is making Yoshi’s Wooly World accessible to gamers of all age. The game features a “Power Badge” system that allows players to utilize collectible gems to purchase power-ups. These power-ups have a variety of uses, such as preventing Yoshi from getting hurt by fire, allowing younger gamers to surpass sections with difficult fire sections.
The game also features a brand new “Mellow Mode,” which turns Yoshi’s Wooly World into a walk in the park. At any point, players can switch to Mellow Mode to enable Yoshi to fly indefinitely, preventing pesky fall deaths.
Nintendo also showed off a line of plushy yarn Amiibos will be released in conjunction with the game. These fuzzy Amiibos allow players to spawn a CPU buddy character in the game to help out with tough sections. Additionally, if other Amiibos are used on Yoshi’s Wooly World, costumes themed around those characters will be unlocked in game, allowing Yoshi to cosplay as Mario, Link, the Inkling Girl from Splatoon, and other Nintendo characters.
With so many grim and gritty games on the market, Yoshi’s Wooly World looks like a breathe of fresh air. It’s cute, it’s innovative, and it’s sure to please Nintendo fans of all ages.
