With 2022 coming to a close, it's a time to reflect on the year's television releases. With so many options for channels and streaming platforms, there is more choice than ever when it comes to TV shows. As a result, it's easy to overlook something excellent in the constant slew of new releases.

Shows such as Severance and Andor have dominated best-of lists, been the subject of rave reviews, and remained at the center of conversations on and offline. Of course, for every show that commands the conversation, dozens more are overlooked. It's time to give them their dues and take a look at the most overlooked TV shows of 2022.

Clark

Clark-Bill-Skarsgard

This Netflix miniseries was released back in May to little fanfare, despite positive reviews. The Swedish series is based on the life of criminal Clark Olofsson, who has been touted as Sweden's first celebrity gangster. 2022's perennial star Bill Skarsgård takes on the role of Olofsson as the series chronicles his life from teenage delinquent to charismatic criminal and selfish career inmate. Olofsson is probably best-known for his part in the Norrmalmstorg robbery, the event that led to the invention of the term Stockholm Syndrome.

Skarsgård plays the titular criminal with his typical charm and intensity, the self-aware commentary throughout sometimes not quite sticking the landing. However, the fast-paced, well-scripted, and engrossing dramatization of a fascinating subject, partnered with Skarsgård's outstanding lead performance, makes Clark a show that should have gotten much more attention than it did.

FROM

FROM-Harold-Perrineau

Sci-fi/horror series FROM sees an ensemble cast fight against an unknown evil in a small town filled with trapped citizens. The cast is headed by Harold Perrineau, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Eion Bailey, and David Alpay, who play an assortment of people who have accidentally driven into the small town and found themselves unable to leave. Perrineau plays Sheriff Boyd, who has been in the town for some time. Eion Bailey and Catalina Sandino play the parents of the Matthews family, who are the audience's entry point into the town. Alpay plays software developer Jade, an insufferable self-absorbed man who arrives around the same time as the Matthews.

Stephen King hailed FROM as one of his favorite new shows of the year, and rightly so. The twisting plot, interesting characters, and genuine fear in the show made it an absorbing and refreshing new watch for genre fans. The mystery surrounding the inexplicable town and the horrors in the woods that come out at night are incredibly compelling. Luckily for those that did catch the show, it has been renewed for a second season, so some answers can hopefully be found.

Connect

connect-miike

Fans of Korean television and legendary director Takashi Miike might be surprised to find that he put out a new television series this year, and that it can be seen right now on Disney Plus. Based on a Korean webtoon, the series follows Dungsoo (Jung Hae-in) who is kidnapped, has his eye removed and implanted into a serial killer, and subsequently escapes his captors. After his ordeal, he begins to have horrible and violent visions, and comes to realize that he is seeing the acts of the killer.

Dungsoo becomes mixed up in the life of the sadistic killer while also trying to retrieve his stolen eye. He also learns that he is immortal and has regenerative Wolverine-like powers. (This isn't a spoiler, as this discovery virtually opens the first episode.) As is expected from Miike, the show is a grisly and violent character study about two different monsters of men, who are more alike than either would want to admit.

Tierra Incognita

tierra-incognita

This Argentinian horror/mystery series for adolescents is on Disney Plus, but audiences would be forgiven for missing it. Teen Eric Dalaras returns to his hometown of Cape Qwert eight years after the mysterious disappearance of his parents. After he receives a message showing ghost hunters experiencing a haunting at Cape Qwert's amusement park, he runs away from his grandparents and finds himself in a town full of mysteries, memories, and ghosts.

The amusement park itself is the main antagonist of the series. Horror-themed and very haunted, the park's ominous presence hangs over Eric and the town. The show isn't for younger children, but for adolescents, it's a creepy and mysterious rollercoaster of breadcrumb clues and monsters that is ultimately fun and well-thought-out.

The Devil's Hour

The-devils-hour-Peter-Capaldi

This UK drama created by Tom Moran and produced by Steven Moffat sees Lucy (Jessica Raine) waking up every night at 3:33 am after having horrible nightmares. At the same time, a string of brutal murders is being committed that seem to somehow link to Lucy and her nightmares. The show also features DI Ravi Dhillon (Nikesh Patel), an investigator with a fear of blood who finds himself investigating the murders. It also treats viewers to a terrifying performance from Peter Capaldi as Gideon Shepherd.

As well as the horrible visions and bloody murders around town, Lucy also has to deal with the dissolving of her marriage, an aging mother with dementia, and a son who would give Damien from The Omen a run for his money in the creepy child championships. Despite this convergence of well-trodden horror tropes, The Devil's Hour succeeds through its scripting and exceptional lead performances.
