Zombies have infested the streets of Tokyo, and the only people who have a chance of surviving are the Yakuza. But how will they defeat this menace? That's what the latest Yakuza: Dead Souls trailer is here to answer, as Sega details all the different ways players can kill a zombie.
Yakuza: Dead Souls is the first title in the series to emphasize gunplay, and its characters will have access to a wide array of weapons, including shotguns and sniper rifles. However, the arsenal isn't just composed of weaponry you'd find in any run of the mill shooter, as there are a few quirky implements of destruction thrown in for good measure. For example, one of Yakuza: Dead Soul's characters, Ryuji Goda, is able to transform his prosthetic arm into a gatling gun -- hardly a shooter cliche.
Players will also be able to "heat snipe" certain items to inflict maximum damage. This essentially boils down to shooting items in the environments and seeing them explode in a cool cinematic style.
Fans of past Yakuza titles are probably wondering how gunplay will be controlled in Dead Souls. In previous games, players would have to press the triangle button to fire their guns. This may sound strange, but it made sense in the context of the games, especially because no aiming was needed and guns themselves were very scarce. Though that control option will remain for new game, Sega knows that it won't work for everyone. Thankfully, for those who prefer traditional shooter controls, Sega is also offering a control scheme that it says "should feel pretty familiar" to shooter fans.
However, guns aren't for everyone, and the Yakuza franchise has always had exceptional melee combat. Fans of the franchise can expect to beat the living hell out of zombies with just about everything in the environment. Players can pick up weapons such as chainsaws, poles, motorcycles and desks, and use them in good ol' hand to hand combat.
With the option to play as fan favorite characters and Sega's willingness to both address a new crowd and appease long time Yakuza fans, there should be plenty to look forward to when the game drops next year. I just hope it brings a story that's on par with past titles.
