XCOM 2, the alien fighting, turn-based strategy game developed by Firaxis Games, is being offered for a limited time free trial by its publisher, 2K Games. The trial period for XCOM 2 is currently available on PC via Steam until April 30th, as well as on Xbox One until April 29th.

Those interested should be aware that this is a free trial, which is different from a giveaway of the game. Users will not be able to continue playing XCOM 2 after the trial period expires, though the save data of users who later choose to purchase the full game will be transferable from the free version, allowing players to pick up where they left off.

The basic plot of XCOM 2 takes place after the events of XCOM: Enemy Unknown, with players controlling the titular military squad with the aim of retaking all of Earth from the clutches of an alien dictatorship. The game is based heavily around cover, equipment, and positioning, alongside notable difficulty and permanently killing off characters Fire Emblem style. In this way, XCOM functions much like a role-playing game, with players leveling, outfitting, and fine-tuning the composition of their squad.

For anyone that sounds interesting to, and who owns either a powerful enough PC or an Xbox One, now's a great time to try out the game. For those wanting to try the XCOM series for the first time and for franchise veterans who never got to play XCOM 2 alike, "Good luck, Commander."

XCOM 2 is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. It is also currently slated for release on Switch on May 29th of 2020.
