The console wars continue, and this time it's Microsoft's turn to throw some shade at Sony over their upcoming next-gen consoles, the Xbox One and the PS5. The PlayStation 5 price and release date were revealed today, but there was a fair amount of confusion over the pre-orders that Microsoft is taking the opportunity to make fun of.

Since Microsoft revealed the price and release date of the Xbox Series S/X about a week ago, people have been waiting anxiously for Sony to follow up with information about the PS5. Sony has now officially confirmed $499.99 for Standard Edition, $399.99 for Digital Edition, and a release date of November 12 in the US and other select countries, and November 19 elsewhere. However, the PS5 pre-order date is where things start to get messy.

The PS5 pre-order date was officially September 17, yet actually started today, but errors and slowed down retailer websites met fans attempting to pre-order the PS5. People attempting to buy on GameStop got a "blocked" message, Best Buy gave people trying to put the console in their cart an error, and Amazon took down its PS5 landing page entirely. People excited to pre-order and already thinking about all the available PS5 games were disappointed, and Microsoft jumped in with a tongue-in-cheek tweet reminding people how much more reliable it's being right now.

The tweet on the Xbox official Twitter points out the Xbox Series S/X's pre-order date, worldwide launch date, and claims the hype is "over 9000" in reference to the Internet meme, and finally adds that it will soon reveal the exact time pre-orders start. All this is a clear jab at Sony, who for indeterminate reasons failed to get its pre-order launch set up correctly.

Some people found this funny, while other comments expressed boredom at console war jokes and suggested that the whole Microsoft vs. Sony rivalry is a marketing scheme. Some Twitter users appreciated the joke, though, and plenty of people took the time to express their personal preferences in the Xbox vs. PlayStation debate. Either way, it looks like a lot of the consoles have potential buyers.

Even if there was a mix-up with the pre-order dates, at least now fans finally know the price and release date of not just Sony's upcoming console, but the PS5 controller and accessories. Today was a big day for PlayStation fans, whether people choose to believe the console wars are real or not.

The PlayStation 5 releases November 12.
