Sony's Playstation line is confirmed ready to take the next step into the future with the PS5, coming in 2020. Microsoft is not far behind, revealing a bit more about its Xbox Series X, although what people actually wind up calling it may cause some confusion.

The Xbox Series Xthe official name of what was before referred to as Project Scarlet, was shown off in glorious detail for the first time at The Game Awards 2019. Since its reveal, new details have continued cropping up around the console, though this one has little to do with its performance capabilities and more to do with its denomination, and that of future Xbox consoles.

The official name of this console is actually just "Xbox." Much like games that are remakes or sequels of older titles with no change in the titles, this may very well lead to people referring to the new console by the year of its release. The "Series X" aspect seems to indicate more of an evolution of the entire Xbox line rather than this particular console. Considering the numerous features of the new Xbox, it could mean far greater overhauls in Microsoft's console line are planned in the near future if this is just the base that future consoles will build off.

This new naming convention may prove confusing at first, but may prove helpful in later years. While the Playstation line has always stayed linear, Xbox has often had multiple console variants with each new console. This has lead to confusing situations like the Xbox One X and Xbox One S being active at the same time as the original, the confusion of which could be eased with a more conventional, numerical name scheme. This would prove a boon to fans of the console, alongside its rumored massive power, of course.

The Xbox Series X is set to release in the Holiday Season of 2020.
