Across recent console generations, console-makers have slowly but surely made improvements to cross-generation accessory compatibility. But, as most console gamers can attest, there's still much to be done. Microsoft is now looking to take a meaningful step in the right direction with the launch of Xbox Series X. It wants to offer console-buyers ease of mind when it comes to picking up Xbox accessories. That's the thought behind the new "Designed for Xbox" labeling.

"Designed for Xbox" is a new label that Xbox will be stamping on specific Xbox partner accessories. The logo means that Xbox has worked directly with the accessory's maker to ensure the compatibilities they list are fully supported. This new labeling system means that all supported hardware will be listed on the side of the accessory's box. Xbox gamers will be able see the green circle, turn the box to see listed platforms, and make a purchasing decision with relative ease.

As for what that means for the Xbox Series X and everyone's Xbox One accessories, Microsoft is trying to keep it simple. Microsoft says that any "officially licensed" Xbox One accessory that connects to their console via USB (wired or wirelessly) will work on Xbox Series X. Additionally, any 3.5mm headsets will also be supported on the next-generation Xbox console.

It may not be universal support for Xbox consoles, but it's still a major effort on Microsoft's part. The majority of Xbox gamers' accessories will comfortably work on the Xbox Series X. And new accessories will make clear their compatibilities, which are all-but-certain to carry forward should Microsoft do a mid-gen refresh in several years or even further.

Alongside these early details regarding the Designed for Xbox labeling also announced 34 current partners for the program. Xbox says its specifically expanded with partners focusing on accessibility, cloud gaming, and the PC market in mind. Mainstays like Logitech, Razer, SteelSeries remain on that list, but Nvidia is also announcing many new partners. That list includes Bang & Olufsen, Audeze, OtterBox, Nacon, Honeycomb Aeronautical, Geek Made Designs, and Cable Matters.

Not only will Xbox users be able to use most of their Xbox One accessories through to the Xbox Series X generation, but they'll also have an incredibly robust line-up of new accessories to choose from, too. Expect to hear more about Xbox Series X accessories as the console's launch nears in the months to come.
