All sorts of great stories and anecdotes can come from playing video games. Whether it was an incredible moment that happened, a difficult boss beaten, or a hilarious one in a million glitch, anyone who has ever played a video game is sure to have memorable moments.

While in previous generations it was only possible to get screenshots of these moments with third party tools, being able to capture and record moments in games has been a staple of consoles since the Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. Here is how players can capture and transfer screenshots on the Xbox Series X/S so that they can show off their accomplishments or misadventures to all their friends.

In the example above, a festive squid was caught in Disney Dreamlight Valley. Players want to show off this squid wearing a Santa hat, but before this can be done some adjustments need to be made in the settings of the Xbox Series X itself.

To enable screenshot capturing, players will need to navigate to Settings. From there, go to Preferences and select Capture & Share. Select Allow Game Captures and change it to Captures By Me. There are a bunch of other options on this page as well. Players can adjust the resolution of recorded game clips, capture location for video and screenshots, and whether the captures automatically upload or not.

Once it has been configured, players can take screenshots anytime they are in a game. Simply press the share button once on the Xbox controller and a screenshot will be captured. Don't hold the button down, as this will record video instead.

How to Transfer Screenshots

Once players have taken screenshots, they have some options as to how they want to transfer and show off their screenshots. The first way is to connect an external storage device like a USB flash drive to the Xbox Series X or Series S and transfer screenshots to it. From there they can move the pictures onto a computer and upload them onto social media sites if they wish to do so. The other method is by uploading the screenshots to OneDrive. Of course, players will need to have set up OneDrive first before they can use the second option.

Regardless of which method players choose to transfer their screenshots, they will first need to navigate to the My Captures menu. From there, select Manage, and it will give you the options to transfer the screenshots to either an external storage device or upload them to OneDrive.
