As it turns out, while the official announcement of the Xbox Series S occurred less than a week ago, fans have been seeing the console for quite some time during digital event segments featuring Phil Spencer.

Back in July, Phil Spencer was a part of the Spanish digital event Gamelab Live 2020 where he was interviewed regarding the future of Xbox. While it may have seemed like any normal interview, the official Xbox Twitter revealed that Spencer had a Xbox Series S on his bookshelf the entire time.

Details regarding the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S were leaked online a bit earlier than Microsoft had originally planned, as details on the consoles quickly spread across social media. Microsoft reacted at first with a meme, but the leak caused Microsoft to officially reveal the Xbox Series S on Twitter shortly after, including the price and date of the console.

Meanwhile, a new rumor suggests that a third Xbox console is under development codenamed "Project Edinburg." Revealed by Twitter user Idle Sloth, who has a history of breaking Xbox related news, the console is said to cover the middle ground between and Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. While nothing has been officially announced, it would be interesting to see how Microsoft would approach another new console in the market, already offering 2 very different options.

The existence of the Xbox Series S has caused varying reactions from fans and developers alike. While the price and next gen features have fans excited for the new console, some developers are voicing concern on its impact on future game development. David Mickner, a multiplayer designer at Infinity Ward tweeted his concern for the console bottle-necking development. As with every console generation, developers who intend on making a game multiplatform have to develop with the lowest specs in mind. While this is nothing new in game development, the concern is how this will impact development of games with 4 new consoles on the way, each with unique offerings in terms of capabilities.

The range in console capability has already had an impact on some big upcoming titles from Microsoft. The recent reveal of Halo Infinite was met with some mixed feelings from fans of the franchise regarding the visuals. While the new game looks promising with the addition of an open world, fans did notice some graphical drawbacks in characters during the gameplay trailer. It was later reported that Halo Infinite would be delayed into 2021, missing the launch date of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Halo Infinite will also launch on the Xbox One when released.

Both the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S will launch on November 10.
