Microsoft Exec Says Xbox Scorpio ‘Aspired a Little Bit Higher’ Than PS4 Pro

Microsoft executive Albert Penello has continued the comparisons between the Xbox Scorpio and the PS4 Pro, stating that the Xbox console 'aspired' a little higher.

This console generation, both Sony and Microsoft have been more than willing to stoke the fires of friendly competition through a war of words. Before the consoles even saw the light of day, Sony was poking fun at the Xbox One over a perceived lack of used game support, and the relationship between the two companies has continued in that manner. With the development of the PS4 Pro and the Xbox Scorpio, there has been ample chance for both companies to try and get one over on the other.

Indeed, one Microsoft executive has been more than happy to discuss the rival PS4 Pro, and their opinion has unsurprisingly been less than adoring. Speaking with Eurogamer, Albert Penello suggested that Microsoft went about 4K gaming with gusto, stating that the Xbox Scorpio "aspired a little bit higher" than Sony’s PS4 Pro. Indeed, Penello has even questioned whether Sony’s console can truly be considered fully 4K.

In particular, Penello is dubious over the console’s 4.2 teraflops, stating that this is "not enough to do true 4K," and has suggested that Sony’s 4K gaming claims are not quite what they appear to be. "I think there are a lot of caveats they’re giving customers right now," said Penello. "They’re talking about checkerboard rendering and up-scaling and things like that."

Penello, who also discussed price points for the consoles, has suggested that perhaps Microsoft had different goals when it decided to create a 4K gaming device. "When we thought about what spec we wanted for Scorpio, we were very clear we wanted developers to take their Xbox One engines and render them in native, true 4K," said Penello. "That’s why we picked the number, that’s why we have the memory bandwidth we have, that’s why we have the teraflops we have, because it’s what we heard from game developers was required to achieve native 4K."

The Microsoft executive is not the only one who has queried the power behind Sony’s upcoming console, with Sony itself having to address 4K support for the PS4 Pro. The device has received some queries from gamers since its announcement, with particular surprise behind the fact that the console will not be able to play 4K Blu Rays. Indeed, Microsoft was also quick to pick up on this fact, using it as one of the main selling points of the Xbox One S.

Of course, all these words will mean nothing if Microsoft is not able to reduce Sony’s lead in the console race this generation. The PS4 has been soundly beating the Xbox One in sales, aside from a few months here and there when Microsoft was on top. However, with the added beef of the Scorpio, and the flexibility of the Xbox One S, Microsoft is clearly feeling confident this time around.
