New target specs are starting to leak out for the next generation of Xbox consoles. There is new credible technical information about all the SKUs of the Project Scarlett, the "Anaconda," and "Lockhart." Some of this information hints at the power of Microsoft's most premium console. Both SKUs are set to release sometime in Holiday 2020.

Sources told Windows Central that the Xbox Project Scarlett could perform five times better than the Xbox One X. According to these sources, the Anaconda is the more powerful of the models, targeting around 12 teraflops of computing power, compared to the Xbox One X's 6TF, and the Xbox One S's 1.4. The presumably more budget-friendly console Lockhart is targeting 4TF, which is notably weaker than the Xbox One X. For base Xbox One and S owners, though, even the Lockhart will be a major step up from the hardware they are currently sporting.

Both Lockhart and Anaconda reportedly have eight CPU cores targeting around 3.5GHz, with Anaconda being more powerful in this regard as well, but only marginally. The relatively modest increase in clock speed over the current generation systems might seem like a disappointment, but according to source the improvements to caching, new silicon architecture will allow the Anaconda to perform anywhere up to four to five times better than the Xbox One X. Windows Central was told by sources that the Anaconda will guarantee 13GB of RAM for games, with 3GB on the OS a total of 16GB, nearly twice as much as the X, which offers a "maximum" of 9GB for games.

Both console models are said to have two core features that will distinguish them from the current generation. Like the PS5, the next Xbox will use an SSD to reduce load times. The consoles will also reportedly have ray tracing technology that will vastly improve lighting and reflection tech in the next generation of games.

This Xbox rumor will excite fans, but take everything with a grain of salt leading up to these console launches. It is still just a rumor. Certainly the Project Scarlett consoles will be more powerful than the Xbox One X. In the next generation Microsoft appears to be focusing on powerful hardware, expanding and consolidating services like Xbox Live and Game Pass, and pushing Project xCloud forward. How exactly this will stack up against Sony's offerings for the Playstation 5 is yet to be seen.
