Playing video games can quickly become a very expensive hobby, and with the games industry’s steady shift away from physical game stores, it is getting harder for players to come across a great game for next to nothing. The issue with buying digital games on consoles, is that that console’s company directly controls the prices for every digital game on the system. Newly released physical games can often be found for a discounted price after only a few months, whereas digital games can now hold their original release price for years.

Sales are the saving grace for many gamers, then, and the Xbox Games Store is fairly good at keeping regular sales ongoing for different publishers or genres. But rarely do these digital sales reach the bargain bin price cuts of physical game store sales.

However, for the last week of May 2022, Xbox Games Store is having one such Super Saver Sale, with discounts on Xbox games ranging between 80-95% off. Predictably, the games that are over 90% off are all mid-budget games to begin with. But cutting these already lower prices means that some games are down to only 99 cents, such as Agony, the 2018 horror game set in hell.

The real gems of the Super Saver Sale, however, are around the 80-85% discount range and include some classics such as The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which is one of the most massive and best reviewed games of the last decade. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, the often overlooked but equally exceptional predecessor to The Witcher 3, is also a part of the sale. Buying both would easily provide hundreds of hours of Witcher content during the wait for updates on the next Witcher game currently in development.

Other great games that players may have overlooked before, and which are also a part of this Xbox sale include Star Wars: Battlefront 2, Shenmue 1 and 2, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered, and Resident Evil Code: Veronica X, which are all 80% off. The classic skateboarding game Skate 3 is also included in the sale as its long-awaited sequel is currently still in development at EA.

Sales like these are a good thing for the games industry as they prompt players to try out games that they may never have been willing to risk spending full price on in case they didn’t like it. But if players do find themselves loving a game such as The Witcher 3, then they will be much more likely to buy the next Witcher game at launch.
