Pre-orders for the Xbox One X have gone live today across all major retailers, letting enthusiast console gamers put in their order for what's likely to be one of the hot new hardware launches of the holiday. Retailers including GameStop, Amazon, Target, and Best Buy have started pre-orders both online and in-store. Stock will be limited, but for now remains available. The price for an Xbox One X is $499.

Microsoft has also announced that the list of games that will be enhanced for Xbox One X has expanded to 130. New titles planning support for Xbox One X include Far Cry 5, Okami HD, and L.A. Noire. The list is likely to continue to grow leading up to the Xbox One X's launch and beyond.

The Xbox One X is a companion console to both of the currently available Xbox consoles, the original Xbox One and its slimmer, streamlined Xbox One S counterpart. The Xbox One X will play all of the currently available games for Xbox One, but features 40% increased hardware power. This allows it to play games up to 4K resolution, while offering additional technical benefits. It also features a 4K Blu-ray drive and 4K video streaming through major streaming outlets like Netflix and Hulu, perfect for media fans that have upgraded their TV or monitors to 4K already.

It's important to note that this is the second wave of pre-orders for the Xbox One X and is for the standard edition of the console only. The first wave of Xbox One X pre-orders was for the limited Project Scorpio edition, which sold out online in just a few hours. Being the standard edition, the version of the console that will be made available after the console launches in November, there is a much larger quantity in supply. That isn't to say that it won't sell out, but it explains why it hasn't sold out already. There are no differences between the Project Scorpio and standard edition beyond changes to the look of the Project Scorpio edition's console shell and controller.

It's difficult to say how long the supply will last. $499 isn't exactly within the cost range where users impulse-buy, but pre-orders do allow prospective buyers to cancel their orders without being charged.

Perhaps the better question is what does it imply if Xbox One X pre-orders do sell out? Or if they don't? Microsoft and Sony have been edging closer to each other in recent months, and a hot new console could give the Xbox a major push.

The Xbox One X releases on November 7 for $499. Pre-orders for the standard edition are available at retailers now, with pre-orders for the limited Project Scorpio edition sold out.
