Over the past few years, Microsoft has done its best to appeal to fans following the rough launch of the Xbox One. Part of this dedication to being more fan-friendly involved the company doing anyway with the short life-span of the Kinect, while pushing for more customizable options for traditional controllers through the Xbox Design Lab. With the exterior improvements in place for Xbox's most important peripheral, it looks like now is the time to improve upon the inner workings of the console's controllers as well.

The possibility for a new upgrade to the Xbox One controller, if it were to happen, focuses on arguably the two most important buttons on the controller: the back triggers. Back in June 2017, Microsoft filed two new patents to the Xbox One controller, which were both granted last month. The patents focused on improvements such as back triggers with an input device for linear geared feedback and motor-driven adjustable tension. The change would result in better feedback and increase responsiveness for trigger-pulling from users. With exclusive Xbox One franchises such as Forza Motorsport and Gears of War leading the charge, respective racing simulation and shooter genres would see noticeable improvements if said upgrades were to be implemented.

Upgrades such as these fit well into the expected console exclusives coming to Xbox One in 2019. With Gears 5 likely coming out this year, as well as the likelihood of a new Forza Motorsport title launching in the Fall, smaller improvements such as these will be noticeable by the most dedicated of fans to each respective franchise. Speaking of shooters, and depending on when these new controller upgrades will go into effect, Crackdown 3 could also see minor benefits from playing with a better controller, even if the game has had its own development stumbles over the past few years.

There's no word on if the improvements will come to the Xbox Elite Controller as well, but seeing Microsoft's dedication to even the tiniest of details further proves the company is doing what it feels is best for fans. From announcing a number of brand new first-party acquisitions at E3 to  continuing to push the envelope with Game Pass, Xbox continues to look primed and ready for the next console generation in the next couple of years.
