Microsoft’s Games with Gold program has proven to be a great success for the company. In fact, over 100 million Games with Gold titles have been downloaded since it began, a milestone that Microsoft celebrated by doubling the amount of Games with Gold games this past month.
For May, Microsoft is not offering as much, but fresh, free (for Xbox Live Gold subscribers) Games with Gold titles are coming nonetheless. For Xbox One owners, one game added in April will be staying on the service for another month, but it will be joined by a title new to the program as well.
Xbox One owners will have a second month to download Pool Nation FX if they so desire, as well as the newly added CastleStorm: Definitive Edition. Released last September for Xbox One, CastleStorm: Definitive Edition is from the celebrated developers at Zen Studios, known mostly for their popular pinball games.
CastleStorm: Definitive Edition sounds like it will be a great “get” for Xbox Live Gold subscribers once it becomes available to download this Friday on May 1st. The game is described as a “tower defense brawler” with a focus on physics-based destructibility. Furthermore, this is the “Definitive Edition” of the title, which means that it includes two bonus expansion packs and enhanced graphics along with the base game.
Among the game modes available in CastleStorm: Definitive Edition are a story mode, co-op, castle customization, and online multiplayer. Since the game will likely be downloaded by a significant amount of people – as is the case with basically every Games with Gold title – gamers expect the online community to be especially active, even more so for the first week of May. The game also supports split-screen, for those that want to enjoy some good old fashioned couch co-op.
Meanwhile, Xbox 360 is still receiving Games with Gold support, this time in the form of both an open world crime game and a racing title. Both Mafia II and F1 2013 are set to be made available to Xbox Live Gold subscribers as free downloads in the month of May.
Mafia II will be available to download for free on Xbox 360 from May 1st to May 15th. The game is an open world action title in the vein of Grand Theft Auto, but with a more serious tone than that series. F1 2013 will round out the month of May, available from the 16th to the 31st.
While the Xbox 360 Games with Gold offerings are not that impressive, especially compared to some previous recent months (March was especially great), CastleStorm: Definitive Edition looks like a fine title for Xbox One owners to download for free. In the meantime, for those that are rocking the PlayStation 4 (or PS3 or PS Vita), don’t forget to check out free PlayStation Plus titles for May 2015 as well.
