There is a number of great and amazing titles for players to check out on Xbox Game Pass. However, though Xbox adds a number of new titles to the subscription service regularly, some games also have to leave Xbox Game Pass every month as well. So far, the new additions to the service have generally outweighed the titles that leave every month, as the library available through the service has continued to grow ever larger.

Most recently, Xbox Game Pass added four new titles across a number of different genres, including the Day One game Sable. The remainder of September also sees games like the turn-based multiplayer shooter Lemnis Gate making its way to Xbox Game Pass, while October kicks fall off strong with titles like Back 4 Blood, Phoenix Point, and Age of Empires 4. However, Xbox Game Pass did already lose two games earlier this month on September 15. These titles included Forza Motorsport 7 as well as Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales. Forza Motorsport 7 was not a big surprise, as the game was widely delisted from storefronts due to expiring licensing deals, but September 30 has some more games leaving the service as well.

The Games Leaving Xbox Game Pass on September 30

Warhammer Vermintide 2 combat

The first game leaving Xbox Game Pass at the end of the month is Drake Hollow. Drake Hollow is a survival game that incorporates base building and base defense as well. The game allows full cooperative play and was regarded as pretty impressive at release for how small of an indie team was behind it. The second game leaving is Warhammer: Vermintide 2. Vermintide 2 is a fantasy horde game akin to Left 4 Dead. However, Warhammer: Vermintide 2 features a number of different classes that completely redefine how players approach its missions and hordes of Skaven.

The end of September will also see Kathy Rain leaving the service, an indie point-and-click adventure from Swedish studio Clifftop Games. At the time of release, Kathy Rain was well regarded as a return to form for a genre that does not receive very many modern additions. Ikenfell will also leave Xbox Game Pass on September 30. Ikenfell is also an indie title but is a JRPG, the writers of which went to great lengths to make Ikenfell as inclusive and sensible as possible. The last game to leave Xbox Game Pass this month is Night in the Woods, and it is a title that subscribers should definitely try to check out while they still can.

Explaining Night in the Woods

Night in the Woods game

Night in the Woods is a narrative adventure game that follows Mae Borowski, a recent college dropout who returns to her hometown of Possum Springs. Upon returning home Mae begins to realize that her hometown has changed a lot over the time that she has been gone. The town is seated firmly in America's Rust Belt and is trying to recover from the closure of its local coal mine and a stagnating economy. Mae eventually meets up with her friends in the town and starts rekindling her relationships with them while also starting to experience stranger and more vivid dreams. The game was very well received upon release and was nominated for numerous awards that year. There are many titles similar to Night in the Woods, but the game delivered a unique experience and story that connected with countless players and fans.

Night in the Woods first began as a Kickstarter project in 2013 that was aiming to raise $50,000. The Kickstarter ended up raising more than 400% of that, allowing the team at Infinite Fall to hire additional team members to contribute during development. Night in the Woods was also supported by the release of two small companion games titled Longest Night and Lost Constellation, which helped establish the game's characters, setting, and story themes before its eventual release on February 21, 2017. Since launch, Night in the Woods has been released on mobile phones, PC, Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, so fans of narrative adventure games can check it out no matter what platform they prefer. Still, those with Game Pass will not have to worry about purchasing the game if they start their playthrough as soon as possible.

What Makes Night in the Woods Special

When Night in the Woods was released, it was praised primarily for its story, beautiful art style, and deep characters. Most of the time players spend in Night in the Woods sees them talking to its engaging characters and going on small adventures with their friends. The other time in the game is spent completing simple platforming challenges, playing music, and trying to unravel what in the world is going on in Mae's dreams. While the amount of game time spent talking to characters and just interacting with them may deter some players who want a more mechanically focused narrative game like Boyfriend Dungeon, it also allows Night in the Woods to thoroughly explore its narrative and characters in a way that many games cannot.

This is also helped by how unique the story of Night in the Woods is. The game is all about exploring Mae's uncertainty as a 20-year-old trying to make decisions that will likely impact the rest of her life while also dealing with struggles like her mental health and regional economy. Night in the Woods focuses on a period in Mae's life that many players can connect with and relate to, but that is hardly touched on by media. For players who have never experienced a similar period in their lives, the story may feel a tad meandering and slow, but for players who can relate, it is extremely successful at encapsulating how one feels during that period.

Night in the Woods is also able to explore its story and setting in a way that only video games can, making it all the more special. Games like The Last of Us Part 2 may be very successful because of how cinematic they are, but Night in the Woods takes full advantage of its medium to tell its unique story. Luckily, the game is not terribly long, so any Xbox Game Pass subscribers who haven't checked it out should have time to do so before it leaves the service on September 30.

Night in the Woods is available now on Mobile, PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
