Although it’s not quite May yet, several day-one Xbox Game Pass releases across console and PC have been confirmed. The Xbox Game Pass list for May, prior to today, included Citizen Sleeper (a narrative RPG), Trek to Yomi (a samurai action-adventure game), Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising (party-based RPG), Hardspace: Shipbreaker (a Sci-Fi physics simulator), Sniper Elite 5 (third-person shooter), and Pac-Man Museum+ (a collection of classics).

However, it seems that’s not enough for Microsoft. A new game has been recently confirmed as a day-one launch for Xbox Game Pass, joining the above games. This brings the total of already-confirmed Xbox Game Pass games for May, so far, to seven.

On May 3, players will be able to download and check out Loot River, an indie dungeon crawling action roguelike. Players will check out an ancient abandoned fortress through procedurally-generated labyrinths, complete with powerful bosses, special loot, and cool abilities. It combines real-time combat with spatial block shifting, as seen in the Loot River trailer below, and puts players up against what the developer Straka Studio describes as bestial abominations.

They’ll need to loot, level up, implement strategies, cast powerful spells, and more in order to survive Loot River, and if they die, they “wake up anew” in true roguelike fashion. The above trailer, however brief, really shows the vibes of the game, as well as its particular mechanics. Of course, it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but it speaks to the various strengths of Xbox Game Pass.

Players want big games on Xbox Game Pass, and with the likes of Redfall, Starfield, and more on the horizon, they get just that. Where the service really works is giving players something new to try when they’re between games or are just looking for something new. Already, the May lineup was diverse, complete with games that are nothing alike. Tossing in this one just guarantees that someone who loves roguelikes also has reason to check out the selection and adds more diversity to t.

It's nice to know about these games ahead of time too, but rest assured, Xbox Game Pass tends to have a few surprises month after month too. There’s no reason to think May will be any different, which means from these confirmed and day-one games to the weekly announcements, there’s still plenty of time for the service to shock fans.

Xbox Game Pass subscribers get a handful of games every month.
