Microsoft has updated its selection of Xbox Live Gold free Games with Gold games, adding two more titles for fans to claim, including Portal 2. The Xbox free Games with Gold games are staggered throughout the month, so subscribers were able to grab two at the beginning of September, and now they are able to claim another two games for their digital libraries.

Right now, Xbox Live Gold subscribers are able to grab Gods Will Fall, Double Kick Heroes, and Portal 2. Gods Will Fall and Portal 2 are available for Xbox Live Gold subscribers to claim until September 30, whereas Double Kick Heroes will remain one of the free Games with Gold games until October 15. October will presumably feature new Xbox free Games with Gold games, but fans should only expect two titles next month instead of the usual four.

That's because the Xbox free Games with Gold for September 2022 mark the last time that the lineup will include Xbox 360 games. In fact, Portal 2 is the last Xbox 360 game that will ever be given away to Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Future months are expected to only consist of two free Xbox One games, though fans will need to wait for next month's lineup to be announced to have more clarification on the matter.

Xbox Free Games with Gold Games for September 2022 List

  • Gods Will Fall (September 1 - September 30)
  • Double Kick Heroes (September 16 - October 15)
  • Thrillville (September 1- September 15)
  • Portal 2 (September 16 - September 30)

Generally speaking, the Xbox free Games with Gold program has been unpopular in recent years. This is mainly thanks to Microsoft shifting its attention away from promoting the promotion in favor of pushing its Xbox Game Pass subscription service instead. However, it seems Xbox Live Gold subscribers are mostly happy with the September lineup, with Portal 2 considered a worthy way to say goodbye to the Xbox 360 side of the program.

Portal 2 was one of the highest-rated Xbox 360 games that ever released for the console, earning critical acclaim for its clever puzzles, the way it evolved the Portal formula, and its engrossing, humorous story. It's certainly one of the higher profile games that have been given away through the Games with Gold program in recent years, and so its inclusion in the September 2022 lineup has been appreciated by many subscribers.

There have long been rumors that Microsoft is going to discontinue Xbox Live Gold, replacing it entirely with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, but that has yet to come to fruition. Reducing the number of free games given away through the Games with Gold program does seem to be a step in that direction, however.
