New Xbox Elite Controller Coming Later This Year, Says Rumor

Microsoft new Xbox One Elite controller rumor

It has been three years since Microsoft released the first version of the Xbox Elite Controller—a premium controller with swappable parts made with pro gamers in mind. Now, rumors are circulating that Microsoft is on the verge of announcing the second version of the Elite Controller.

The rumor mill began turning once again when The Verge’s senior editor, Tom Warren, published a tweet confirming that the codename "Washburn" is in fact, the version 2 of the Xbox controller. Warren also revealed that the controller will be priced at $149 and will ship in October.

The first Xbox Elite Controller has been well-received by pro-gamers and everyday players alike when it was released back in 2015. Initially, people were skeptical if Microsoft would be able to pull off a tournament-ready controller, but all doubt disappeared when the actual product came out. The Elite Controller was regarded for its smart design, and luxury feel. In our review of the controller, we were especially impressed with the gamepad, which we think is “the best gamepad currently available on the system - and probably any other.”

In fact, the Xbox Elite Controller became extremely popular during the first few months that Microsoft had a hard time keeping up with demand. Back in March of 2016, players were disappointed when the manufacturer revealed that there wouldn’t be a significant increase in the supply of the controller, which was already hard to find at launch.

Given the popularity of the pro controller’s first version, it’s no wonder that rumors about the second version are spreading like wildfire. In fact, this isn’t the first time that rumors circulated regarding a new Xbox Elite Controller. A few months ago, the Chinese website Baidu was the first to leak information that Microsoft is developing a new Xbox One Elite Controller. The report revealed that the updated version would feature a USB-C charging port, a dedicated button for switching profiles, adjustable analog sticks, and more. When those rumors began early this year, people anticipated an announcement at E3 2018 but no reveal was made at the expo.

In the end, Microsoft still hasn’t released any official statement confirming these rumors, so it’s best to take everything with a grain of salt. However, if the information leaked by Warren turns out to be true, it would mean that the version 2 of the Xbox Elite Controller will ship as early as October (similar to the release month of version 1) and Microsoft is due to make an official announcement soon and start advertising this product.

Of course, it would make sense for the company to host a reveal via a gaming expo or something similar. As luck would have it, two events are happening this month with Gamescom 2018 on August 21, and Pax West on August 31. Maybe an announcement will be made at one of those events?
