Microsoft is reportedly working on a new Xbox controller designed with accessibility needs in mind according to a recent leak and follow-up reporting. An image was released on Twitter by perennial leaker h0x0d showing off a unique rectangular controller with Xbox branding on it. Windows Central is now reporting that the controller is real, and will potentially be officially revealed between now and E3.

No details are available regarding the controller beyond what's self-evident within the image. The controller itself is thin and rectangular with two large, prominent buttons labeled "A" and "B". On one side are the more typical Xbox controller menu buttons and d-pad. The controller's shape presumably allows it to be used in a variety of ways, where a normal Xbox controller requires it to be held and used in a very specific way.

Less obvious are other features that require some speculation. Along the top side of the controller are a series of icons engraved in the controller's plastic, coinciding with menu options and other functionality for the Xbox One console. An unseen switch or sensors along the top could allow for a unique method of menu navigation. There's also an input plug on one side, and perhaps on the other as well,  which could allow for additional controller accessories based on the user's needs.

Obviously, the full utility of the controller remains to be unveiled by Microsoft, but the intent should be clear. This controller would be hugely meaningful for users with accessibility needs that a typical Xbox controller could never provide. Such a controller could have myriad uses both for PC users and those who have an Xbox for a set-top box, too.

Coincidentally, in recent months, rumors have swirled regarding Microsoft working on a new iteration of the Xbox One Elite Controller. The Xbox One Elite Controller, optimized beyond even a standard controller for specific use playing traditional console games, and this new controller, designed specifically for accessibility with much of the console game elements deconstructed, show how Microsoft continues to explore the needs of its diverse customer base.

Official information regarding the new Xbox controller will hopefully arrive in the weeks ahead, though it's worth noting that Microsoft's plans may change or that the controller is just an excellent fraud. Hopefully, it's real, because there are a lot of Xbox owners who would undoubtedly love to see such a controller.
