Rumor Patrol: Next-Gen Xbox To Use Windows 9; Smaller & Cheaper Than 360

By | 5 years ago

In the recent onslaught of next-generation console gaming news and rumors we learned that the “Xbox 720” may actually be called the “Xbox Next” – yesterday’s rumors now point to the unit now being codenamed “Loop.” Along with the new codename, the rumors detail that this new Microsoft console will be cheaper and smaller than the Xbox 360, explaining that it will operate on Windows 9.

Take a breath.

The rumor mill is churning and after speculation of the next-gen console from Microsoft debuting at 2012’s E3 conference, there has been a lot of news circulating as to what may be in store for the new system and when we’ll see it on shelves. Game Rant also reported earlier this year that Microsoft was hiring to develop a next-generation console, so fingers crossed that we’ll see this console sooner rather than later since it’s been in the works for quite some time.

Responsible for codename “Loop” and the additional news above for the was Xbox 720, MSNerd, goes into detail about his expectations and knowledge of the console internals, from its operating system variant of Windows 9 to its core processor which falls in line with the July report that the Xbox 360 predecessor could run on a brand new Windows OS. Could the rest of his story be true?

Along with the smaller size, the bigger news from a consumer standpoint is the lower price of the unit, something Nintendo is sensitive about in designing the Wii U and hence, the talk of their new console only potentially supporting one of the Wii U touchscreen controllers. Will the Xbox Loop make use of Xbox 360’s controllers on top of Kinect, which they will undoubtedly keep as well?

Rumored games in development for the next Xbox include Mass Effect 4, Treyarch’s next Call of Duty,  Alan Wake 2 and Saints Row 4, but when will the Microsoft Loop come out? Some analysts believe that the PlayStation 4 will launch before Microsoft gets a chance to release their new system, but there has been now big news regarding the PS4 at all. Others believe that the Xbox Next Loop 720 will come out with a Fall 2013 release.

Either way, Jim Carrey said it best in 1996’s The Cable Guy,

“The future is now! Soon every American home will integrate their television, phone and computer. You’ll be able to visit the Louvre on one channel, or watch female mud wrestling on another. You can do your shopping at home, or play Mortal Kombat with a friend from Vietnam. There’s no end to the possibilities!”

Does the news, if true, make you more or less excited with the possibilities of a smaller, cheaper system along with the addition of Windows 9?
