The Fall Dashboard Update for the Xbox 360 has been available for a lucky few who signed up and were accepted for the beta program, but they have been unable to join their friends’ parties who weren’t fortunate enough to gain early access to the new dashboard. Everyone has been waiting for the Fall Update to hit, but (as Microsoft has just announced) it looks like no one will have to wait much longer. This information was brought forth when Microsoft sent emails to all those who were accepted into the Fall Dashboard Preview giving them a heads up that the real deal would be launching on November 1st.
“On November 1, 2010, there will be a mandatory service update to Xbox Live. This update will both add new features to your service and also enhance the interface, navigation, and responsiveness of Xbox Live.”
The update will be mandatory available the first time you turn on the 360 and connect to Live, starting November 1st. The update will give downloaders a few new and improved features. The first thing players will notice is that their avatars will look a little more like people and a little less like cartoons. This change was made in order for the avatars to function better with the Kinect’s motion tracking. Voice chat will also be getting a much needed upgrade with an improved audio codec, making voices a little bit clearer when you and your buddies chat. The final update comes with the addition of ESPN3, which will allow Gold Members to watch their favorite sports whenever they want!
There’s always the choice to not update your dashboard as well, but that will mean no Xbox Live. The update will take roughly 10-15 minutes to download so be prepared to set that time aside the next time you fire up your 360. It’s not a painstaking procedure and the pros far out way the cons of the update, so if anyone decides to not do the update then they should go sit in the corner. The update lands just in time for the launch of that fancy new motion-camera Kinect, and is fully compatible with peripheral. This means that once Kinect launches you’ll be able to use it to browse your dashboard with your hands sans controller.
November 1st is today so hopefully you took some pictures of you enjoying the old dashboard because now it’s gone forever…
