For some reason, zombies are the “in” thing right now for video games. Left 4 Dead, Dead Rising, Call of Duty and even Red Dead Redemption have all jumped on this trend to success. The downloadable market has also seen its share of zombie games, including Dead Nation and Burn Zombie Burn.
Not wanting to be left out of the zombie market, Microsoft recently revealed that they will be publishing a zombie game of their own. Thankfully, their goal is to make this one stand out from the pack by making it an open and online world, just filled with zombies.
Currently codenamed Class3, this open world game is being developed by the newly formed Undead Labs. While we have yet to see any actual gameplay yet, it sounds like it will include all the usual zombie staples. Finding shelter, food, ammo, and protecting fellow surviviors are all in the game, except this time in an open world setting.
Undead Labs sets the tone of what they are attempting to portray with their decription of the game:
“The end is here. Human civilization has been annihilated. The few, scattered survivors must band together, rebuilding civilization in a third-person action game packed with sweet guns, fast cars, hand-to-hand combat, and copious amounts of zombie gore. Players choose where to make their stand, designing and fortifying their settlements, performing daring raids for valuable stores of food and ammunition, and rescuing other playable survivors. The open world develops in real-time, shaped by player actions, with content determined by their choices and the ever-increasing zombie threat.”
For those who aren’t already tired of the zombie genre, this game sounds exciting — if Undead Labs can come through on their promises. We had action with Left 4 Dead, and we got plenty of survivor rescuing with Dead Rising, but we have yet to see an open world filled with zombies. The idea of finding your own shelter and fortifying it to your needs, in addition to your actions affecting the world around you, sounds very interesting. Doing this with a friend over online co-op sounds even more exciting.
What remains to be seen, given that this is an Xbox Live Arcade game, how much effort will actually be put into this game. What type of story or mission structure will be in place to drive the game forward? Will it be one of those “see how long you can survive” type of games? How fleshed out will the world be, considering it takes a lot of time and resources to polish and bug test an open world game?
Since this is going to be a $15-$20 XBLA title (just a guess, it could be more), we’ll have to wait and see if Microsoft and Undead Labs will put the time and effort into making this a high quality open world game, and not just a tiny town like Dead Rising 2: Case Zero.
The concept of Class3 sounds very appealing, and hopefully more information about the game will be revealed in the upcoming months. Stay tuned to Game Rant for all future news on Class3.
So readers, what are your thoughts on an open world zombie survival game? Think Microsoft and Undead can pull off a title this ambitious on an XBLA price and budget?
Class3 [working title] is currently in development for Xbox 360.
