After Hugh Jackman's departure from the character following 2017's Logan, many fans have been wondering who will be the next one up to play Wolverine. According to Kingsman and X-Men: First Class director Matthew Vaughn, these are some of the names worthy of taking on the comic book role.

After Disney acquired the rights to 21st Century Fox a couple of years ago, Vaughn, who recently spoke with ComicBook.com, added to the conversation circulating around who will become the next Wolverine. "I think Taron [Egerton] could do it in his sleep. Aaron Taylor-Johnson could do it as well. I mean, I think Aaron or Taron would be my first two choices could do it really well.”

Those two names are no surprise, as Vaughn not only has experience working with the X-Men universe, but has also worked with them both in his previous films. Egerton is best known for his role as Eggsy in Vaughn's Kingsman spy films, while Taylor-Johnson donned the green and yellow costume in Vaughn's black comedy superhero film, Kick-Ass. While those names at first don't seem like many fans' first choices, both actors have gone on to star in many other acclaimed works that have showcased their range.

For Egerton, he got to flex his acting chops in the Etlon John biopic/musical, Rocketman (which earned him a Golden Globe win), and Taylor-Johnson would go on to prove his star power in other blockbusters like Godzilla and Avengers: Age of Ultron before tapping in to his more rugged, brutal side in Outlaw King and Nocturnal Animals.

Even if Vaughn's picks do not end up landing the role, whoever plays Wolverine next will of course have big shoes to fill. After playing the character for 17 years, Hugh Jackman's career-defining performance became an instant fan favorite that has cemented him as one of Marvel's top heroes. While it's still unclear when a casting announcement for the next Wolverine will be announced, Kevin Feige already confirming other big hero groups like the Fantastic Four set to appear in the MCU (which the first film centered on the group is already set to release in 2023), the casting search for the X-Men will be underway in no time.

While Vaughn has been busy working on his Kingsman franchise, his return to working with the X-Men in the MCU shouldn't be ruled out just yet. While new casting announcements and project release dates will surely surface online in the coming months, in the meantime, fans will just have to experience Hugh Jackman as Wolverine all over again while also catching up on the Marvel Cinematic Universe's recent releases like the Hawkeye series and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
