WWE 2K23 has introduced various changes and improvements to the series, taking a big step in the right direction and improving almost every aspect of last year’s game. From better gameplay mechanics and improvements to MyGM mode to a refined Universe Mode and two new stories for players to follow in MyRise, WWE 2K23 has breathed life into a once-dying series. One of the most interesting and enticing additions to WWE 2K23 is the new match type, WarGames, which is on track to become the new Hell in a Cell.

For years WWE’s Hell in a Cell has been the star of countless legendary matches, turning into one of the most popular match types, both in WWE 2K games and in the real world. However, after hosting superstars like Batista, Triple H, The Undertaker, John Cena, and Randy Orton, the more recent Hell in a Cell matches have not lived up to the history of the structure. However, the newly added WarGames, which has featured on Survivor Series, can quickly become the WWE’s new gimmick match of choice.

What is WarGames

Like Hell in a Cell, WarGames also includes a cage that surrounds the superstars inside the ring. However, it does things a bit differently than any other match in WWE 2K23. WarGames has two rings side-by-side, that are encompassed by a huge steel cage and a 3V3 tag team type match. Two superstars will start the match, and every 90 seconds, one of the others will be allowed to enter the match, giving one team a clear advantage since they will outnumber the other team at least twice in the match.

WarGames matches are decided via pinfall or submission inside the ring, but the match can only be finished once every contestant has entered the ring. Further, as superstars enter the ring, they will be able to pick up a weapon of choice before entering the cage, adding to the chaos within the cage. These elements add a lot more excitement to the matches, give fans more to watch out for and making WarGames much more compelling as the go-to match for future WWE rivalries.

Why WarGames Is More Interesting Than Hell in a Cell

The current state of the WWE has seen a rise in the number of factions and tag teams emerging with the likes of the Bloodline and Imperium. While Hell in a Cell matches have hosted tag teams in the past, for the most part, the best matches within these types have all been singles matches. With the introduction of WarGames, both in the WWE and on WWE 2K23, faction matches finally have a gimmick that will not only entertain the fans but also keep gameplay interesting for players.

One of the biggest benefits that WarGames holds against Hell in a Cell is that the matches are not plagued with multiple pin or submission attempts to end the match quickly, since every superstar needs to be inside the cage for the match to end. Further, the system that releases a superstar every few minutes also makes the matches more suspenseful, as there will be instances where the match will turn into a handicap match, giving one team a clear advantage. These features, plus the introduction of weapons each time a superstar enters the fight, gives WarGames in WWE 2K23 a level of excitement that can not only match Hell in a Cell but exceed it.

Hell in a Cell is one of the most historic match types in WWE, but with the introduction of WarGames in 2022’s Survivor Series, it might be time for the tried and tested structure to give way. In WWE 2K23, WarGames provides players an opportunity of creating some legendary matches with legendary contestants, all the while boosting show ratings in Universe and MyGM game modes. As more and more factions continue to rise in WWE, there is a high probability that WarGames matches will take over Hell in a Cell’s current spot as the go-to gimmick match in the company.

WWE 2K23 is scheduled to release on March 17 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X\S.
