After taking a one-year hiatus, WWE 2K22 developer Visual Concepts decided to spend the time rebuilding its franchise from the ground up. One of the key changes made in this year’s iteration of the franchise is a new and improved Career Mode, called MyRise. MyRise will give players the opportunity to create a superstar and guide them through the ranks from prospect to WrestleMania headliner.

MyRise shakes up the traditional MyCareer format and offers players over 50 hours of gameplay, which includes around 1,000 fights and two separate storylines. Players will create their superstars and progress through fights while shaping the character they want to portray using a crowd reaction system. This lets superstars turn face or heel seemingly based on their actions, making WWE 2K22's Career mode the most comprehensive yet in the franchise.

While creating a new superstar to embark on the MyRise journey, players will have several options that dictate their creation’s fighting style, background, crowd reaction, and storyline. The two storylines have been created to accommodate both a male and female MyPlayer’s journey, which should add replayability to the game mode.

Players will also be able to set their superstar’s background, picking from a shortlist of available backstories that will give the MyPlayer certain boosts. The three backgrounds revealed in the gameplay trailer of WWE 2K22 are MMA, Indie Talent, and Pro Athlete, each of which will provide unique boosts to different aspects of the wrestler. For example, the MMA background improves striking and submission, while the Pro Athlete background will boost grappling and durability.

Every superstar and legend in the WWE game's roster has now been assigned a class that will determine their fighting style and allocates their starting attributes. Each weight class will share these starting options, which means that Cruiserweights can be powerhouses and Super Heavyweights can be high-flyers, adding a lot more versatility to each superstar.

As mentioned, WWE 2K22’s MyRise mode will feature over 1,000 matches and 50 hours of gameplay, split into two storylines for male and female superstars. At the start of MyRise, players will be shown the ropes by two legends: Shawn Michaels and Beth Phoenix. WWE 2K20 also featured the choice to pick a male or female superstar in MyCareer, however they shared a single storyline that only had around 25 hours of gameplay. For MyRise, players hoping to get the full experience created by Visual Concepts will have to play through MyRise twice.

Brands, Shows, and Rivalries in WWE 2K22

One of the biggest changes to the Career Mode in WWE 2K22 is the inclusion of complex rivalries and the ability to switch between playing a heel and a face. Players will be able to play on each of the big three brands in WWE: RAW, Smackdown, and NXT. Within each brand, players will start rivalries that create the stories based on the choices they make while progressing in MyRise. By adding this depth, it will make each playthrough of the MyRise unique. Including the ability to create rivalries and form partnerships, all while being able to switch sides, should let fans tailor their MyPlayer’s career and create some memorable moments.

Visual Concepts’ revamping of the franchise could revolutionize the wrestling genre, and hopefully improve Career modes in future titles as well. Adding rivalries and other options for players to follow their own path give MyRise a deeper sense of realism, and should make Career mode more enjoyable. MyRise is not the only thing changing in WWE 2K22, but seeing its improvement may make it a good place to start when firing up the game.

WWE 2K22 releases March 11 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
