With WWE 2K20 standing out as one of the worst-rated pro wrestling video games ever made, there's a lot riding on WWE 2K22's success. It definitely seems as though 2K Sports and Visual Concepts are going all out with the next entry in the long-running franchise, taking extra time to develop the game and ensure that it's better-received than its predecessor. This attempt at a comeback after WWE 2K20's failure includes some rather ambitious and risky changes, like WWE 2K22's new control scheme.

2K Sports recently touched on 10 features in WWE 2K22 for fans to look forward to, and among these is a new control scheme. The new WWE 2K22 control scheme is making some drastic changes to how fans play the game, like making the B/Circle button initiate a "Grapple" instead of being used for pinning and Irish Whips. The Y/Triangle button will be used for reversals still, but there will also be an option to block if players hold it. X/Square Button and A/X button are used for light and heavy strikes, respectively, while holding the right trigger and using the face buttons will allow WWE 2K22 players to hit their Finisher and Signature moves, as well as initiate the Payback and Submission features.

The WWE 2K games have used basically the same control scheme for years, and so changing things up with WWE 2K22 is certainly a risky move. On one hand, the new control scheme could improve the gameplay experience and make it more fun to play, but on the other hand, it could also end up alienating players who are used to the old controls. Ultimately, fans won't know what to make of the WWE 2K22 controls for sure until they are able to play the game for themselves, and the WWE 2K22 release date sometime in March, it will still be a few months before they get to do so.

Fans will have to wait until March to actually play WWE 2K22 for themselves, but they'll get to learn more about the game between now and then. 2K Sports has promised more WWE 2K22 news in January, around Royal Rumble time, where players will learn more about the features teased by the latest trailer.

The latest WWE 2K22 trailer focused on the aforementioned 10 new features coming in the game, with a variety of exciting things announced besides just new controls. For example, WWE 2K22 has MyGM mode, bringing General Manager mode back to the series after it had been absent for well over a decade.

It definitely seems like 2K Sports and Visual Concepts are going in the right direction with WWE 2K22, but fans will have to wait until next year to find out if the game lives up to expectations or not.
