"You Will Not Survive," is the tagline for Wrath: Aeon of Ruin, a brand new 90s-inspired FPS built on original Quake technology. As the tagline implies, Wrath is a throwback to the visceral, gory, high-intensity action of yesteryear. It's being developed between the legendary 3D Realms and a collection of some of the most impressive retro FPS modders in the industry. This love letter to a lost age of FPS games will be released on PC this summer and will then come to consoles in early 2020.

There's really no better way to describe Wrath than to point towards its influences. It's a game is built to compare to classics like Quake, released in 1996, and Hexen, released in 1995. These are 90s FPS games with outlandish plots mixing eldritch worlds suffused with both arcane magic and terrible machines.

These games are filled with demons and unspeakable creatures. Plus, at the center of them is a protagonist with an arsenal of outrageous weapons and a willingness to destroy anything that stands between them and their goal.

That Quake influence comes through across every aspect of Wrath. This includes its FPS gameplay, its 3D pixelated visuals, and its heavy metal story.

Speaking of Wrath's story, it revolved around a figure known as the Outlander. Tasked by the Shepherd of Wayward Souls, the Outlander must traverse a dying world and slay a number of Guardians, as well as the horde of enemies along the way. It's a simple premise, a set-up designed to allow for maximum carnage, but Wrath's launch trailer shows just what's manageable with such a simple idea. When stripped down to such a classic, basic structure, mood, atmosphere, and intensity of gameplay come to the forefront.

90s throwbacks seem to be coming back into style in a big way. 3D Realms has already announced it's also publishing Ion Maiden from Voidpoint, which takes influence from other 90s FPS games like Shadow Warrior and Duke Nukem 3D. And 3D Realms is just one of many companies bringing back the classic style of 90s FPS games. Other examples include Dusk and Strafe, but Wrath certainly looks like it could raise expectations for the niche, going forward.

Wrath: Aeon of Ruin, releases this summer on PC. It will have a "full release" in early 2020 on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
