With new television shows constantly being made, it’s no surprise that there are inevitably going to be bad scenes along with the good ones. Further, because what shows are being made is dependent upon the general mindset of society, television can sometimes reflect sensitive parts of reality, or trigger upset responses from viewers.

When it comes to a medium like film and television that can have such a broad range of tones, themes, and emotional impact, it’s hard to really define what the worst moments were, in one focused category. In this case, worst could mean hardest to watch, the most grueling emotionally, or just poor writing or acting.

Considering that the goal of most television is to evoke certain emotions or mindsets in the audience, the worst moments in television can be measured by how they impacted viewers. That being said, every person’s list of 2022 worst television moments would obviously vary depending upon their particular emotional and mental state. However, there are just some moments that had such a big impact that we can all agree, they should make the list.

Police Return a Victim To Dahmer

Dahmer_Cops Return Teen Scene

The scene in Dahmer where the cops return the teenage boy to Dahmer, despite him being nearly naked, drugged, and having a concerned witness. In this scene, Dahmer captures and drugs a teenage boy, who manages to escape. Dahmer’s neighbor, per usual, is suspicious, which is why when cops return the boy to Dahmer later, she’s furious. Though the child is clearly drugged up and barely clothed, the cops believe Dahmer when he tells them that the visibly underaged boy is his boyfriend. This action ultimately leads to the boy’s death.

Though this scene is based on truth, knowing that didn’t help viewers prepare any better for how upsetting the scene was. While the writing and acting efforts that went into creating this scene were nothing short of spectacular, it was the deep and haunting emotional toll that it took on the audience that landed it on this list of worst moments. Seeing this poor child suffer due to the negligence of those that were supposed to protect him, and knowing that it really happened certainly brought a traumatic element to the already difficult-to-watch show.

Jimmy Kimmel Ruins Quinta Brunson's Moment

Anyone that watched this years Emmy award show likely picked up on how awkward it was when the star and creator of Abbott Elementary, Quinta Brunson, went on stage to accept her award but Kimmel over-committed to his skit and remained on stage while she spoke. Before announcing her win, Will Arnett dragged a “passed out” Jimmy Kimmel on stage as part of a skit pretending that Kimmel was passed out drunk as a result of losing the talk show category. While the skit seemed fine leading up to the announcement of Brunson’s win, it was what happened after that made it so problematic.

As Brunson walked on stage and Arnett walked off, Kimmel remained “passed out” in front of the mic, forcing Brunson to position herself around his body to give her speech. Though she played it off relatively well and didn’t let it soil the excitement of the moment, many viewers were annoyed by the blatant disrespect and privilege of the gesture. Kimmel has since apologized to Brunson, but it served as a good example of the disrespect female actors have to put up with in the industry that still needs to be addressed.

Family Guy's "Mister Act" Episode

Family Guy_Stewie And Lois Drum Scene

Family Guy has always pushed the barriers of what’s appropriate for television, which commonly includes problematic relationships. That said, with Stewie’s hatred for his mother, the idea of an inappropriate relationship between their characters had not quite been touched on yet, as it should have remained, but Seth MacFarlane can’t help but take things to uncomfortable places. In this scene in season 20, episode 11, Stewie has a creepy drum circle fantasy that is tonally suggestive about him and his mother, and left viewers cringing.

Eddie Munson’s Death in Stranger Things Season 4

Season four of the popular series was full of heartbreaking moments and intense scenes. Though Eddie was a new character this season, within just 9 episodes, fans quickly fell in love with his rebellious yet loyal personality. He was both the perfect representation of the 80s aesthetic and the perfect addition to the already dynamic group. His kind demeanor, love for 80s metal, and willingness to prove himself made him an easily admirable character.

Those qualities, paired with how closely he bonded with some of the other beloved characters made his unexpected death in the season absolutely heartbreaking for fans. Eddie’s earlier guitar solo, used to distract the demonic bats attacking them, was easily one of the most iconic scenes of the entire show, making it even more devastating when he dies not long after. Though the scene was very well-written and performed, it had a significant emotional impact on the audience. In fact, fans were so crushed by the loss of his character, that many have pressured the creators to bring him back.

The Oscars Slap

Of course, a list discussing the worst television moments of 2022 wouldn’t be complete without the Chris Rock and Will Smith Oscar dispute. Now, this moment can’t simply be reduced to the slap, because as many people know by now, there is a bit of a history of tension between Rock and Smith. Though the slap was the peak incident of the scene, it really began with Chris Rock’s harsh joke about Jada, which made a jab at her struggle with Alopecia. The joke clearly offended Jada, as she rolled her eyes at it, and obviously, it got Will in an emotional state. No matter which side you take on the matter, there’s no denying that both men were not behaving appropriately for an award show, and as a result, the moment has gone down in Oscar history.
