Making a sibling cry by telling him they're an orphan or making them think mustard is Cheez Whiz is usually the extent that most people receive harm from their brothers. For some, that's not even harm, but brotherly love. Probably. Maybe. Some anime brothers take it too far, however, and deliberately try to harm their siblings.

Some are just plain deranged and don't have any qualms about ending their own blood. They have their parents to blame for that but one has to admit that those kinds of brothers sure make for some intense or riveting anime drama. Hence, the evil brother trope is quite prevalent— even popular in many anime titles. These ten notable bad brothers are the perfect examples.

10 Sesshomaru - InuYasha

Inuyasha_Sesshomaru_Fight

Granted, Inuyasha is only a half-brother to Sesshomaru but the latter still makes his life a pain to live. While Sesshomaru is a full-blooded demon with their father's "legal" wife, Inuyasha's mother was a human affair partner, making their rivalry even more heated.

So Sesshomaru made it clear to his half-brother that he doesn't care much about him. Sesshomaru was even prepared to kill both Inuyasha and his romantic partner, Kagome, all for a sword. Moreover, Sesshoumaru often looks down on Inuyasha since he's part-human.

9 Donquixote Doflamingo - One Piece

Doflamingo using Birdcage

Speaking of brothers killing their own brothers, Doflamingo from One Piece is quite a piece of work. He serves as the main antagonist for one of the series' arcs and he's just as bad to the heroes as he is to his family. He not only killed his brother but also their father.

To make it worse, Doflamingo killed his father in front of his own brother, all because he lost some privileges. If that's not enough, he later killed his own brother like it was nothing to him. Truth be told, it does seem he doesn't care about anyone but himself, making him detached from all living things.

8 Raditz - Dragon Ball

Goku has died many times in his own series but keeps coming back thankfully without much consequences. His first death ironically was due to his very own brother, Raditz. He can be summed up as Goku without morals or restraint regarding his powers.

Raditz, in true Saiyan tradition, wanted Goku back within the family's reach. Of course, Goku didn't want to come with his ill-tempered brother so Raditz's first response was to kidnap his own nephew and Goku's son, Gohan, to blackmail Goku into coming with him. Oh but that wasn't enough for Raditz, he also wanted Goku to kill some of Earth's inhabitants on top of agreeing to come if he was to release Gohan.

7 Illumi Zoldyck - Hunter X Hunter

Hunter X Hunter - Phantom Troupe Member Illumi Zoldyck Infusing His Sinister Nen Into The Needles He Uses

Illumi Zoldyck is a bit different compared to the other evil brothers in this list. He's not really that intent on killing his own brother, Killua. Rather, he's more concerned about overprotecting him to the point where he even takes control of Killua just to ensure his survival.

He's also incredibly toxic and keeps compelling Killua to be evil as he believes that darkness is the only thing sustaining their family. Moreover, Illumi is cold-hearted and only acts mostly in his own self-interest. The worst part is that he even tries to turn Killua into him, even going as far as implanting a needle into his brother's brain so that the latter will flee fights he cannot win.

6 Schneizel el Britannia - Code Geass

schneizel from code geass

While on the topic of brothers acting in their self-interest and are willing to make puppets out of their siblings, Schneizel from Code Geass is quite the blond bad guy. In times of war, he was willing to leave behind his blind and paraplegic younger half-sister, Nunnally just because it's a pain to bring her along.

He doesn't even have any redeeming qualities apart from his royal blood and his appearance. Moreover, Schneizel happily gunned down his own sister, Cornelia, and even allowed the death of millions of people in Tokyo. The fact that he has the same level of intellect as Lelouch combined with his lack of empathy makes him even more despicable.

5 Byakuya Kukichi - Bleach

byakuya from bleach

The very first serious arc in Bleach was when Rukia was abducted by the Soul Society as she was slated for execution. This led to Ichigo and his friends diving headfirst into the Shinigami world to rescue Rukia. But it turns out Rukia wasn't so helpless because she had family there, specifically her older brother, Byakuya.

Too bad Rukia couldn't depend on her brother to vouch for her or even stand for her right to live. Heck, he even walked Rukia to the execution site. Because Byakuya, for some reason, is apathetic toward people and doesn't act at all even when he feels conflicted. So he was willing to let her sister die. He did redeem himself later on and gradually became more caring toward her but the damage was already done.

4 Light Yagami - Death Note

Light Yagami in Death Note

In a more grounded and realistic contemporary context, a brother like Light Yagami doesn't deserve any form of a family at all. He's a certified psychopath and believes that he's above everyone, especially when using the Death Note he found. Granted, he has the intelligence to back that up, but one has to remember that he was outsmarted by someone younger, so he's not all that great, honestly.

Oh, and he also let his sister get kidnapped and his father get harmed all to gain a strategic advantage in his feud against L's successors. Besides, having a brother that decides to kill off society's slackers when he gets bored of killing all the criminals isn't particularly preferable.

3 Knives Millions - Trigun

knives vs vash in trigun

For a change, here's a brother who actually cares about his own sibling. Knives from Trigun wasn't inherently evil but thanks to torture and the experiments done to him and his brother, Vash, when they were kids, he developed a psychotic disdain for other people. Thus, Knives isn't kind to anyone, even his allies.

In fact, the only person he's kind to is Vash. How's that a bad thing? Because he's hell-bent on planetary genocide and wants his rehabilitating brother to join him. Simply put, Knives wants to wipe out all humanity and wants Vash to tag along. He might not want to harm his brother intentionally, but he's one of the worst bad influences as far as anime brothers go.

2 Itachi Uchiha - Naruto

Itachi Beats Sasuke

Some people think of Itachi as a hero for what he did for Konoha. He practically prevented civil war and prevented Sasuke from dying by murdering his family in advance (they were going to die anyway). However, the damage he did to Sasuke was a fate worse than death.

He pretty much ruined his own brother by forcing him to watch their parents die by his hands several times. Oh, he felt guilty about murdering 98 percent of his clan, alright. He even wanted to die after that but he wanted Sasuke to do it because didn't want to kill himself. So he let his brother become a monster and live as an orphan because that's the best way to deal with what he did, supposedly. Sure, he's a hero— just not a hero anyone would want to be siblings with.

1 Akio Ohtori - Revolutionary Girl Utena

akio ohtori from revolutionary girl utena

Akio Ohtori is one of the wealthiest figures in Revolutionary Girl Utena, a coming-of-age anime where an academy holds some dark secrets. One of those secrets is Akio Ohtori and he's the worst older brother a sister can ask for. He has a toxic and awful relationship with his sister and he pretty much treats her as a slave, oftentimes offering her up as a duel reward.

Oh but Akio's abuse of women doesn't end there. He has multiple affair partners and even has a secret affair with his own mother-in-law. Beyond that, he also groomed his sister's best friend and later violated her just because he's jealous of her bond with his sister. In short, he's every Freud scholar's ideal subject. Not exactly brother-material.
