Team17's iconic Worms series has been around a while, and it's been almost a year since Worms Rumble was first announced. The battle royale Worms game, which originally released in December 2020 on PC and PlayStation, enjoyed crossplay functionality, and it appears that Nintendo Switch owners will soon be able to join in the fray too.
As part of Nintendo's E3 presentation today, it was announced that Worms Rumble was finally coming to Nintendo's hybrid console on June 23. Switch players will soon be able to join in the chaotic real-time action, and even play against PC and PlayStation users in matches with up to 32 players. And that's not all: to sweeten the deal, Team 17 is offering the exclusive Patchwork Bear outfit as a free download available at launch.
Worms Rumble took a radical departure from the series' traditional turn-based gameplay, but fans of the Worms series will still find plenty of familiar-looking weapons and other tools. Explosive sheep, holy hand grenades, and jet packs are all present and correct, so Switch players will soon be able to unleash their weapons of mass worm-related destruction with the best of them.
The game was originally released to celebrate the series' 25th anniversary, and garnered a healthy boost in popularity towards the end of 2020 by being one of the free games offered on PlayStation Plus last December. No doubt its release onto a brand new platform will help buoy the game even further and keep the explosive carnage rolling.
The big appeal of Worms Rumble was no doubt its unexpected turn towards battle royale gameplay, offering 32-player deathmatches as opposed to the traditional 4-player options of its predecessors. Even the aged but ever-popular Worms Armageddon tops out at 6-player games after an anniversary update last year. Still, the enjoyable and ridiculous core of the franchise is still very much present in Rumble, providing laughably violent action in every match.
Though the Switch version won't enjoy the appeal of a free download like the original release, it's looking like it won't set fans back too much money on the Nintendo eShop. If the exclusive Patchwork Bear outfit isn't enough, more customization options will also likely be available through the game's microtransaction system. After all, it's important to look one's best before exploding a rival worm to smithereens.
Worms Rumble is out now for PC, PS4, and PS5, with a Switch version coming on June 23.
