Ten years after Worms Armageddon hit our PC screens, developer Team17 has finally announced a sequel to the hilarious 2D manic series — Ladies and Gentlemen, meet Worms Reloaded, coming to a PC near you on August 26th 2010.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Worms franchise, it may be a good idea to check out the trailer, featured below on this page. At a fundamental level, you are a worm on a 2D plane, and the aim of the game is to annihilate all the other worms on the screen. Inevitably, what follows is a frantic, funny and (quite often) incredibly tactical experience.
Available solely through Steam, Worms Reloaded is moving away from the more recent console 3D experiences and is (in the words of the developer) taking gamers back to the “good old days” of worm blasting fun.
Here’s what Martin Brown, Business Development Director at Team17, had to say about the upcoming title:
“Worms Reloaded has been a labour of love for the team given the legacy of 2D PC Wormsâ„¢ titles such as Worms 2, Worms Armageddon etc. It has been almost 10 years since the last 2D game was released on personal computers. In bringing Worms Reloaded to PC, we’ve reintroduced so much of what gamers loved about the good old days, and it’s fitting that it is also the first Worms game we’ve self-published since the early games. We are very much looking forward to supporting the game through the community on Steam as well as our own Facebook page.”
Worms Reloaded also has a whole host of new features to add to its madcap repertoire, so we decided to just give you the highlights:
- Over 60 single-player missions to get your teeth stuck into.
- Up to 4-player online and local multiplayer action, with full steamworks integration.
- Huge amount of customisation — everything from your worm’s skin color to his hat to his locale, can all be edited by you.
- New fully featured landscape editor (pictured below) so that you can create and share your own levels.
- New weapons and old favorites are back in the fray.
- HD Visuals and PC Specific controls so that your PC experience is the right experience.

Personally, I’m a little unsure. Don’t get me wrong — everything about the game sounds fantastic, but in my opinion, it’s a little expensive at £18. Of course, that has no bearing on how good a game is, but it does factor into whether or not I’ll be buying it day one! Having been a long-term fan of the Worms series however, I think I may be tempted into getting this pretty quickly. Especially due to the fact that it has full steamworks integration — as crazy as it may sound, I don’t buy PC games unless they’re on Steam. Everything else is too much of a hassle, and Steam just… works.
In other words… Yes, I’m pretty excited by the news of a Worms Reloaded release date, and trailer is pretty nifty too. You can pre-order Worms Reloaded now on the Steam page now, and get a handy 10% off your bill. You can also find more information at the official Team17 website.
